Why did you do this... you have just made me terribly discontent with my M40-ish build... now I am wanting a Springfield... no chance of ever owning a Garand... so maybe I will splurge on a 1903.

Do you have any more information on these post-64's as this is the first I have heard of a post-64 being used in Vietnam... Were they chambered for .30 Cal(.30-06) or 7.62x51... what scope was used... etc... I know there was a lot of improvising... any more details would be greatly appreciated.

@et al, I am correct in saying that the scope on Chuck's rifle in the photo is a 2nd generation scope in black... in all the photos that I can find... the scope does not have the characteristic green hue of the 1st generation... thanks!

I know this is an old thread... but... Doc, Can you... or anyone... elaborate a bit more on this set-up... especially the 'Weaver" rings... were the Weaver rings called into service in the early days before the Picatinny rail and rings were common... thanks!

I am process of building 2 M-40-ish rifles... not perfect clones or replicas... rifles that will be shooters and used regularly... a .223 and .308... both on early actions... and I would be happy to pay $500 to $600 for a good quality new scope patterned on the Redfield... preferably USA made or...

Why could they not get it right? There is so much documentation, photos, and etc available... and they really messed it up... the turrets are all wrong... the scope looks the a patch work of different greens... and the reticle is incorrect... they go to all that effort... and completely miss the...

The biggest issue I have seen is that the barrel is moved too far forward when cut and threaded... the Remington 700 Varmint drops quickly from the 1.25" at the recoil lug through a bell curve to a smaller diameter... most smiths or barrel contours leave a much longer flat in front of the recoil...
