If I recall, before the barreled action was installed in the AICS, the magazine was free to travel up through the magwell until the bottom plate on the magazine bottomed out on the chassis. With the receiver in place, the travel of the magazine is stopped. What part of the receiver is stopping...
Would the Alpha Type 2 magazine (single feed like the AICS mag) work properly in a Stiller Tac 30 A/W to feed properly with longer COAL without having to make magazine latch modifications (like is sometimes needed when converting to AW mags?) If the problems some people have had with magazine...
Does anyone have a measurement of the width of the flat section between the 45 degree Vee on an AX or AICS chassis? In photos it looks like it's about .350" or so, but I really have no idea. Thanks!
My rifle sometimes hits the center of the primer, and sometimes it's obviously off center. I guess that means there's some clearance between the firing pin and the hole in the bolt. Does this matter for accuracy? Does the primer care where it is struck?
Are the firing pins in Remington 700s usually fluted? I thought that they were not, but I just saw the factory firing pin from an XCR compact tactical 308, and it had four flutes and looked similar to the fluted ones offered by PTG.
I'm curious about what Stiller is building for the MK13, but pretty much everything I find is the same article from 2010 that says the contract was awarded. What's been going on since then? All I've found is that it has "improved tolerances" and it has an anti corrosion coating on the firing...
I saw a post where someone had problems with the flutes on the bolt of the Stiller TAC 30 catching the lips of an AICS mag if there was any pressure applied to the bottom of the magazine. I'm not sure what the physical difference is between a TAC 30 and a TAC 30 AW, but if the magwell cut is...
Does media blasting (like prepping for cerakote) hurt a melonited surface? Since salt bath nitriding isn't supposed to "grow" on the surface, that implies that the hardening INTO the surface. If you're just cleaning and roughing the surface without trying to remove too much material, does the...
If I'm interpreting things correctly, one reason Remington's need truing is that they are machined PRE-heat treatment for easier machinability in high-rate production. Custom actions are machined in an already hardened state, so while they are more difficult to manufacture, they don't have the...
I see that some people are using AW magazines with custom actions cut out for them (Defiance, Stiller, etc.) What kind of bottom metal is needed to accept an AW magazine? Will an AW magazine work in an AICS if the action is properly cut for it?
The angled part of the bolt handle that touches the receiver during primary extraction looks a bit different on a PTG bolt when compared to a stock Remington 700 bolt. It looks longer or broader for lack of a better word. Does it help with primary extraction, or is that entirely a function...
Is there any difference between the brass Federal uses for GMM vs. their hunting ammo (Power Shok, Vital Shok, etc.)? I've been very paranoid about keeping my brass separated by GMM vs. Power Shok, and I was wondering if it was OK to just throw all the once-fired cases into the same container...
I'd been using RCBS case lube oil on a foam pad, and it seemed fine. I recently picked up a bottle of Redding case lube, and it leaves a sticky residue behind if I just wipe the cases off with a paper towel. Rather than just going back to RCBS, I figured I'd ask you all what the easiest to...
I see that chamber reamers often have the distance to the (rifling) lands measured as a distance from the case base to the lands. For example, I believe the Palma 95 reamer for 308 Win has that distance as 2.159" How is freebore measured/defined? When somebody says his rifle has .150" of...
How important is it to trim the cases to spec? Does it affect accuracy? Is it possible to have the case grow so long as to not allow the round to chamber?
Have any of you ever gone the optimum charge weight route to find a "robust" charge weight, and then fine tuned with seating depth? Since loading on or very close to the lands can increase pressure, and loading too far into the case (too short) can increase pressure, what seating depth should...
In recent ladder testing, I identified 42.9gr of Varget to be an excellent place in my rifle. 42.6 was also very good. 43.2 was good, but not great. The weather has been pretty cold, so I'm concerned about transferring data into the summer. If 42.6 and 42.9 both work well, I imagine 42.7...
If you work up a load for your particular rifle (say 42.9gr Varget with a 175gr SMK), can Quickload identify an equivalent charge of a different powder? For example, would Quickload calculate that 42.9gr Varget gives a similar pressure spike, similar burn, and similar velocity to (just guessing...
How important is it to remove the powder residue from the outside of the cartridge neck before resizing? If it is left on and scratches the die, is the damage to the die very important? Are the scratches made in the die enough to functionally damage the brass, or does it only cosmetically...
I can't find the USO picatinny rail for the Accuracy International AE rifles. I'm assuming they don't make them anymore. The only other source I can find is Ken Farrell. I've never heard of him and have no idea if the product is good. Does anyone else make a picatinny rail to spec (i.e. ALL...
