    Hunting rifle choices, questions

The Winchester in 7-08 would be my choice if I did not already have a lifetime supply of .308 and .30-'06 brass. .30-'06 can be loaded down with H4895 to match the recoil of the 7-08, but the 7mm bullet ballistics will always be better. He made a good choice in that selection; affirm his choice...

    F T/R Competition Optics Help

Love the video! I still say that CharlieNC shouldn't be ashamed of his score - that's my point. You guys at Palo Alto are an awesome group of shooters! I'll try to get there when I move closer, which will be soon. One question: did the High Master who shoots .223 get his High Master F/TR card...

    Help,Model 12LRP Loads

If the action is not bedded, that is the first step. I know it's an HS Precision. My HS Precision shot 0.9" with every ammo in the world, then after bedding (and lapping) it shot .28". I would not recommend buying a new barrel or anything else until the action is bedded. That's just part of...

    F T/R Competition Optics Help

That's just about Master classification shooting. Just shoot more. Master level (194/200) shooting at 300 yds. with a .223 is pretty dang good. Even with .308, there are only a few High Masters at 600 yards. I don't think anybody shoots High Master (197/200) scores in F-class with a .223 at 600...

On Remington 700 Long Range, 30-06

Niles, is this action bedded? I'm thinking it will shoot even better with bedding. The Berger 185 hunting bullets are definitely GTG at 1,000 yards, and they are a good compromise for expense, recoil, and availability. Jim

Rookie reloader. Best powder for ar15

I don't know what 1200r is, but 4198 is faster than H322, so it's not within the burn rate that I recommended. That said, Gorski uses it, so you might ask him. Jim

When this happened to me, the box test showed the variable that needed to be changed, and it was the scope click value. Jim

    Fieldcraft Countersniper math

At 700 yards, almost all bullets take 1 second to get there from the muzzle. Sound takes 2 seconds, so the difference is 1 second. Still, it's hard to measure accurately. At 1,000 yards, TOF about 1.5 seconds, maybe a little more, and sounds arrives after total 3 seconds, or 1.5 seconds later...

Hunting & Fishing White tail round=to many options ugh

Yup. 125 grain Sierra or Speer flat-based soft-points out to 200 yards are easy on wallet, shoulder, barrel, and will kill deer They have thinner jackets, designed to expand more quickly than the 165-180 grain bullets. The heavier bullets may not open as much, but they will do the job just...

    Best binos in 600-800 range

I have the high-end Bushnell w/laser range-finder, and they can be found at somewhere like CameraLandNY for less than $800. However, my son-in-law got the Bushnell Legend Ultra HD or whatever it's called, which is a straight bino w/o range-finder, and his is every bit as clear as mine, maybe...

Any reason you never see builds on Winchester Actions?

It is; do it. The factory barrels are plenty accurate. I bed the action, and diamond-lap all the barrels. Rarely have one that won't shoot under 0.6" for 5 shots at 100 yds. Some are much better than that. If you want to change triggers, get a Jewell, either target or hunting, depending on the...

    Bullet drop table for .308?

Agree with dmike out to 300 yds. After 300, it's usually about 3 MOA up to 400 yds. Now it gets simple. Add 1 MOA every 25 yards until about 700-800 yards. Jim

    shooting beyond 500 yards

TacticalBoltKnob is correct. Error factors: ammo, wind, shooter, spin drift (a right-twist barrel in the Northern Hemishpere demonstrates spin-drift the same whether it is right-side up or upside down, since the spin is called "right spin" but is actually clockwise, which does not change when...

Rookie reloader. Best powder for ar15

Almost anything you can find will shoot well in AR's. Powder burn rate won't make much difference in accuracy. Just pick one that's available; any burn rate from H322 to Vihta Vuori N540. Do not shoot 62 gr milsurp bullets. You'll never know whether the rifle or the shooter is doing anything...

Range Report Cortisol is and spin drift .308

A .25 MOA combined spin drift and coriolis will occur at fairly short range, but you will likely not notice it. That is, you will have a combined drift of more than 0.25 MOA at 400 yards (more than 1 inch total). We're talking northern hemishpere, but that is you where you are. The reason you...

    Fieldcraft Hecs

I've been wondering the same thing, so I congratulate you on making the purchase. By all means, please report back. If it works, it will save loads of expense and hassle both on the ground and in the blind. The hunt you're going on is another thing altogether. I also would love to whack a big...

Fieldcraft Anyone know of some good books?

Shots Fired in Anger (probably the classic first-person account of a shooter in conflict), Not a Good Day to Die, Two Wars (Nathan Self-NAGDTD and TW are reportage and first-person accounts, respectively, and together probably represent the best look at one operation in Afghanistan or anywhere...
