Built a pre war pre 64 that was a mag conversion, had an old Ideal fibreglass stock. Added a bolt handle ( the one on the gun wasn't stock so I made one that was ) bedded it, repaired the bolt head to accept std. ctg., installed a douglas XX .30-10 #7, trimmed it down close to win . specs. ...
Just an FYI if anyone cares, I have an old M-70 that supposedly came from the USMC Depot that was closed at I think Hawthorn NV. It has a fibre-glass stock that was bedded, free-floated and marked IDEAL inside the barrel channel. It has a replacement heavy barrel in .30-06 ( unmarked ), iron...
Hey German, try this, it is what I do and it seems to work for me. Practice at long range, I use 150 yds-6" target, take your time and try to make hits, I won't kid you, I miss more than I hit but if I was actually shooting at a silouette target I would hit everytime now with ease. Then when you...
Mine is a 1911, Old John did a hell of a job and the fact that it served as long as it did and appears to be making a comeback with Uncle Sam's specwar groups says quite a bit. On another note I carry a G21, G17, G26 and a P226... depending on dress code and whim. :)
I guess this is where you are supposed to introduce yourself. I'm a Gunsmith and Dealer from Northern Calif.... yeah, I know, sorry for you, I get that a lot but without us hardheads there wouldn't be any sales and repair here and Kommiefornia would be a purely socialist-nanny state. I was...
Hi all, got mine done this week... still naked though. Going to target it this weekend and see how she does. If I'm happy I'll rip it all down and engrave what needs engraving and send it to the finisher then start with the prelim. handloads. Don't have an MST yet so I'll have to make due with...
Hey SB15, you can modify your own handguard. Look at pics of these rifles and just use that as your reference. Some of them had just enough wood removed to allow mounting and dis-mounting of the scope from the rings, others had almost all of the handguard cut off with only 1/2" to 3/4" showing...
Check the gunshows, I managed to find a good Lyman Alaskan for my C for 175.00. They're out there still, just have to look and be in the right place at the right time sometimes.
Well, they're just plain fun to shoot and it's a satisfying feeling of accomplishment to hit stuff a ways out there sometimes even further than the guys and gals with the more modern stuff.
These guns in the original caliber are usually not a problem. Be very careful of guns that have been chambered up to 300 h&h and 300 win mag etc., there have been incidents of burst barrels. As I have understood in talking with other gunsmiths the barrels in some of them Eddystone in particular...
I did my M1C and M1D and the D was by far easier. The C is a bear and it has to be worked with solid carbide only, HSS and Carbon won't cut the receiver, only makes a cute shiney mark. Then count on 2-3 taps per hole to tap... yes I said 2-3 taps per hole and they screech and pop as you lose...
To install an M1D mount you need to remove the bbl., cut the bbl. stub to fit the base paying attention to length of the cut because that is what screws into and stops on the receiver face. Then you need to reinstall the barrel and be certain it's indexed correctly... perfectly, otherwise you...
If you're not too worried about money the LRB M14 SA is the best one out there I think. I scoped mine with an ART II and it shoots like crazy. The M 25 would be a very good choice if you are going to keep it permantly mounted. I picked up one for the right price and accurized it and installed...
Check out Leatherwood ART II, I've had one for years now and couldn't be happier with it. They are a little spendy now and can be hard to find but they work and are Repeatable, Period. There is also a guy back in the midwest that can rebuild them if needed.
I've done both although not on an AR platform... M-14. I had the choice of bbls., bolts, op rods, you name it and got Exactly what I wanted including how I reamed the chamber for H.S. I personally think if you build instead of convert you are money ahead in the long run and more satisfied with...
As a gunsmith they all have their positives and negatives. I have had 700s come through that have the scope holes drilled out .030" to one side and reciever faces that were not true. I have also seen bolt lugs on pre 64s that were only bearing one one lug and split tangs and goofed up triggers...
