Rifle Scopes 1000 yard Tikka T3 rifle build in 308win

Okay...
so ive bitten the bullet and decided to try myself in 1000yard shoots. And to allow me to attend more shoots in nh area ive decided on 308win.

Rifle on order is Tikka T3 Varmint Stainless Lefthand. Compared notes and reviews with Tikka Spotter...and just couldn't justify extra $625 for the nice sporter stock. As a plus the varmint stainless comes with adjustable cheek piece like the super sporter.

Next on the list...how do I get this gun to shoot at 1000yds...from my readings I need a 20moa scope. Note that I will be precision reloading (somewhere between a 92 and 99% Max load)...


I plan to start with 168amax.

Scopes ive reviewed are sightron s3. Leupold tactical. Burris xtr. Zeiss conquest. Bushnell tactical. Millet TRS. Vortex PST. WEAVER....ETC


At this time I believe I need a minimum of 60moa adjustment in an optic..when using a 20moa taper mount....enough????

I'm leaning towards a Millett TRS 4-16x modified mil dot.
considering reviews price and overall bang for buck. Yes a s3 is better as is most of the ones I have reviewed ...but at over double the price up to 5 times the cost...I don't see it making that big of a diff.

for benchrest I would go for more clarity..since the guns are always rock solid...but shooting prone I'm more of a liability than having best optics.

I have a Tikka T3 Varmint Stainless Steel Left Hand as well, but mne is .243.

I use a 20MOA base and a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP MRAD.

I zero at 200 meters, have no problem hitting targets 1000m away.

First off, as far as bullets go, I would suggest using something in the 175+ weight range. I believe the Tikka barrel will be a 1:12, but somebody can (please) correct me if I'm wrong on that. You'll need to test the heavies to see how/if they perform for you. The 168 A-Max is a great bullet, but you're going to see the accuracy start to fall off very fast after 600 yards or so. I like the 178 A-Max, but the 175 Sierra Match King is also a popular choice (my rifle just prefers the A-Max), due to their higher BC. Do some research and testing with the Lapua 155 grain Scenar, too. You may be surprised at what you find.

As for the scopes, I would put the Millet last on the list of the ones you've mentioned. The Millet scopes are good <span style="font-style: italic">for the money</span>, but the others are just better scopes (and more money, of course). I'm not just some glass snob. I've owned a few Millet scopes and still have a TRS-1 on my main prairie dog rifle, which is an AR. However, I had one go tits up on me in the field, on my .308 (something in the magnification ring came loose). Bushnell was great in replacing it, but I could never completely trust them again.

I think the rest of the scopes you listed are good options for what I would consider "medium level" scopes. I personally have a couple of Bushnell Elite series scopes (both mil/mil, FFP, mildot) and I highly recommend them. However, the PST, Weaver and Conquest all get good marks, as well. I would just weigh the available options on those models against what you want and make your decision from there. They're all in the same basic price range, but the cost would be my last concern, especially when you're only talking about a small difference. So, my checklist, to determine what I would buy, would be as follows:

Turrets/Reticle: mil/mil, moa/moa, dots/hashes/BDC, SFP/FFP, etc.

Magnification range: what best suits not only the type of shooting you do the most, but what you might need in the future. It's better to have a little more than you usually need, than not enough when you need it. However, this can also be the same for the low end, too. For close up/moving shots, it's nice to have a lower power setting for a better FOV, if that's a possible need. A lot of people overlook this by focusing on the high end, then they're not able to get a sight picture or acquire a close/moving target, when the time comes.

You'll have to check the adjustment range on all of them to be sure you can get to 1000 yards. I think most of them are capable with a 20 MOA base. Any other preferences are up to you, such as illuminated reticle, tube diameter, zero stops, etc. To me, the reticle/turret adjustments and magnification range are the most important. YMMV.

Tikka 308 are 11" twist. Used 175 SMK for 1000 yards, 168s ain't enough. I would make sure I had 100 moa if no holdovers.

I would pick the SIII 6-24x, Vortex 6-24 and Weaver EMDR above the other scopes mentioned. You would probably need a 20moa rail for the Vortex PST and others. Maybe the EMDR has 100moa but not sure.
