During load development at 100yds with my 308 I followed the OCW load development process. Found what I thought was optimal and began changing my seating depth. Got that to where it's shooting 1/2" or better repeatedly. But as soon as I started moving back in distance's my groups started opening way up. At 200yds 1/2 or even 1 MOA aint happening. I'm averaging 1 3/4 to 2 MOA at 200yds. I've checked the easy stuff...(ie changed shooters, checked equipment) No one can get it to shoot beyond 100yds, kind of has me scratching my head. How can a load/gun shoot really well at 100yds and fall apart beyond that? For the record I'm shooting the 155grn Lapua scenars, 46.6grn Varget, loaded .010 off rifling, 2816fps from my 20" barrel. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the Lapuas need a faster than 1 in 12 twist barrel due to their length since I can't muster the near 3000fps palma loads? But still not sure why it would shoot that well at 100yds. If anyone one has experienced this I'd appriciate any information you might have. At this point I'm thinking of just switching bullets and trying the 2156 Sierra's since their a bit shorter, but I'd still like to know what's going on.

Re: 100yd Testing

Go to 300 yards if you are a good enough shooter.

My 100 yard tests dont spread as much.. 300 yard if your not throwing the shots off will show more spread and be way easier to see which load is better.

And sometimes the 100 yard can be misleading.. Good at 100 but anything after its wild. 300 yard will give you a little better look at what the load will do past 300 yards.

Re: 100yd Testing

You may not be able to mustard up to 2900+ with that. Are you showing signs of pressure? Granted that my barrel is 26", I load mine up to 48 grains of varget behind the 155 scenars. This is extremely hot, so you need to work up accordingly. To get the best performance on the 155 scenars, you want to drive that sucker as fast as you safely can.

Re: 100yd Testing

Thanks for the suggestions!

During the OCW testing I went up to 47.3 with no pressure signs. I'll work up again and slowly push it harder and see what I come up with. I know I won't see 2900 but maybe I can get close enough to scare it.

Thanks again for the help

Re: 100yd Testing

The scenars are fine with 1:12" twist rate.

I find they are sensitive to seating depth despite what others say. I hear some say they shoot great when jumped, but they often fail to mention that they shoot best when right at the lands.

Also if you have access to a chrony and perform your OCW or ladder over a chrony, you will find the charge that gives the least spread in muzzle velocity will work well for you.

Try seating those scenars long, and see how it shoots then.
