12 Years A Slave TRAILER 1 (2013) - Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt Movie HD - YouTube

Based on the true story of Solomon Northup played by (Chiwetel Ejiofor) a free african american who is deceived, kidnapped, and sold in to slavery. I'm not one to get into slavery movies honestly, it always seems to spark arguments about racism. Seeing as Django came out a while back at first i wasn't that interested in this film. I should've looked at the director and immediately known what kind of movie this would be. Steve McQueen has only made three movies, all critically acclaimed, two of which star Michael Fassbender, and his third (12 years a slave) also has fassbender in the supporting act. If you liked Shame or Hunger you will love this, McQueen has a directing style of his own much like McCarthy has his own writing style. McQueen usually covers some of the deeper/darker aspects of the human persona and it shows in this film as well. The setting didn't intrigue me so much as the acting, and boy is it good. It's damn near phenomenal on both accounts of the lead role and the supporting.

I knew Chiwetel Ejiofor was a good actor but i didn't know he was this good. That said he didn't impress me as much as Fassbender. I've always said to myself Fassbender was going to be the next big thing in cinema and it looks like he's right on track. This is the first time i've seen him play a villain and he nails it, giving one of the most memorable villain/protagonist performances i've seen in a long time. He is downright evil and makes DiCaprio's Calvin Candie from Django look like Nicholson's joker does to Ledger's: childish. Fassbender will receive an Oscar nomination for this, and perhaps Chiwetel Ejiofor as well. This movie is pretty brutal from start to finish and paired with some great acting it could be the biggest surprise of the year for me at least.

Having grown up in the rural south in the 50's and 60's, I well remember the times of 4 public restrooms...White Men, White Women, Colored Men, Colored women. I think I would have trouble watching this one without standing up in the middle of the theatre and raging.

I'd like to add that while it's historical and based on a true story, it's a wonderful bit of storytelling on top of that. For me personally, the fear of such an injustice as false imprisonment and execution is deeply visceral, and watching Northrup's story unfold over time made me so uncomfortable.

If you liked this film you should try out Hunger by Steve McQueen (he directed both of these films and it stars Michael Fassbinder at well as IRA Member in prison in the 1980's in England)... Great film. You can get it on Hulu Plus or at the local B&N from the Criterion Collection excellent film. I'm big fan Steve McQueen's work ( both of them English one and the American One).

dont waste you money on this piece of liberal tripe. The black people in this movie are beaten, raped, tortured, murdered, ripped apart from their families and beaten again!
All the white people in this movie are either cruel sadistic rapists or unemotional uncaring morons. Brad Pitt is the only man in the movie with an ounce of decency
and he is only in the movie for 2 minutes. If you need another reason to hate white people go see this movie....

You do know it is based on a true story by a man that was enslaved in just this manner! You can find the original book at Amazon... As for slave holders being unemotional, unemotional, sadists, rapists, and morons-- well that does basically sum up the institutional short comings of owning people... This is totally liberal tripe about how bad slavery is. Sure is...
