Re: Cheap emergency fuel
I like the 'kelly kettle' idea, most definitely. Primarily for the fact that it'll operate near anywhere, on near anything. Conversely, the 'jetboil' may be fast and efficient, but you're locked into ONE specific type of fuel to which you're behold'n to a specific logistical supply. Little/no "replenishment" on the "anywhere/anytime" front.
I won't deny that my touting of the Optimus stove is out there, but at least it is somewhat flexible on liquid fuels that are available nearly anywhere that civilization congregates. (read: Gas-Station)
Now I'm coming from the perspective of "dire-straights" and the "make-do-with-whatcha-gots-RIGHT-NOW" type of mentality. For the professional camper, who climbs North Face's on a bi-weekly excursion, that's a whole other 'kettle' of fish. (get it?)
There are so many different directions one can take with 'portable cooking' and choosing the best method is as superfluous as choosing the best firearm, let alone 'caliber'.
All of which, though, leads to interesting topics and perspectives. Carry on.
