I have an SPS tactical 308 1 in 12 twist I am working up a load for. Yesterday I tried 46gr of Varget. The five shot group was 3/4 of an inch. Do I need to stay with Varget and just increase the charge or move to a different powder? I am using Lapua brass and CCI primers.

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

They may settle down at distance, 100 yards isn't much of an indicator for any form of bullet performance. Depending upon application, 3/4" groups is not horrible.

You could also try a different bullet, different powders...Try some SMKs, they are very easy to get to shoot well.

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

If you are getting 3/4 moa out of a stock rifle you are doing pretty good. What is your goal? A higher MV, better accuracy, or what?

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

I worked my way all the away up to 47.8 gr Varget with 155 Scenars in Win cases (47.4 for Lapua cases) to get 2925-2950 fps out of my 24" tube.

No pressure signs, and case life (Win) is 30+ reload cycles.

What are your charges with the H4895? Im workin on some loads for my buddies sps-t and tried some H4895 in Lapua brass with the 155's this past weekend...45gr-45.5gr showed some promise as did 42.5-43.5..no chrono though.

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

Thanks for the replies. I was having a hard time getting back to this because I forgot my username for a couple of day. I thought I might have to start another account but I finally remembered it. After some more testing with Varget and TAC the best I have been able to do was with with 46gr of Varget seated to 2.330 to ogive or about .015 off the lands. The Velocity is 2700FPS and the groups are about 3/4MOA. I am not very happy with this so I will probably go to another powder. My 155 Berger VLD's shot good with Reloader 15 so I might try some of that.

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

Let us know, I got about same 3/4", but (correction)2785fps with 20" 5R using 46.2 var and 155amax's. I decided to try scenars and bergers next before I switched powders.

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

just got back from testing some 155 scenars/lapua brass and IMR 8208 XBR out of my buddies 20" SPS-Tactical. I loaded from 44gr to 45.2gr in .3 increments. 44.6 and 44.9 showed nice potential and averaged 2723fps(44.6gr) and 2756fps(44.9gr) for those charges. 45.2 gr averaged 2771 and showed NO pressure signs whatever. Thinking I might try some 45.5, 45.8 and 46.1 to get the velocity up while keeping a close eye on pressure signs. Have heard other reports of people going over listed max loads without any trouble with the 8208 powder. These rounds, however, are loaded .020" off the lands for a OAL of 2.312 @ the ogive, so maybe thats why im not seeing any pressure signs?

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

I personally use varget, but have heard good things about ram tac. Never used it though. I have the same rifle and mine prefers the 168 grainers. Good luck

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

I don't think you'll see pressure signs until the 47's. Shot 200 rounds in a class this weekend, and chrono'd, dope justified the readings.

2820 FPS
rem700 20" 5R
46.0 gr varget
210M primers
.01 off lands
lapua brass

Only showed slight rounding

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

Shot today from my wife's Surgeon / Bartlein 20" MTU .299 / .308 1:10

45.0gr. IMR 8208XBR
155 Lapua Scenar (154.3gr)
1X Fired Lapua brass timmed to 2.010" / neck sized in Redding Custom Comp (.335" titanium nitrite bushing)
.015" out of the lands (2.203" to Ogive)
Federal 210M
5 shots @ 100 yards = .236"
Temp: 58
Alt: 1142
Baro: 29.6
Humid: 53%
Wind: 13 mph.

1. 2800
2. 2856
3. 2800
4. 2833
5. did not register

Average velocity of 4 shots = 2822 fps.

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

I am going to be reworking a load for mine soon as it comes back from the smith with a new 26 inch tube, but i was getting a solid 3000fps using 2000mr (50.5grs) with a sd of 8fps and an extreme spread of 17fps. this load is not giving me pressure symptoms, although varget over 45.5grs did flatten my primers and give a hard bolt lift with that particular barrel.

Re: 155 Scenar Help with 20 inch barrel

46.2 TAC, 2.825" coal, hBN coated, Win brass.

20" LTR I get 2940fps (.7 moa)
22" Kreiger 1-10" I average 2920 depending on temp (.4 moa)

If you can't surpass 2900 fps and you are not constrained to 155gr class due to outside controlls, you'd be better off with 178gr Hornady.
