16-18 inch shorty rifles

How would a 7mm08 do with an 18" barrel. Very fond of the caliber for hunting, and thinking my next build might be a 18" barreled 7mm08

Here's a crappy cell phone pic I took of my new 16.5" Rem700 SPS in a short McRee folding chassis. It's 26.25" folded up! Should make an awesome truck/ranch rifle once I get it done.

PS: Please forgive the crummy work area, I had to move my workspace to the dining table so I can watch the baby while my wife gets some sleep!!

Question:

Remington 700 Pistol Thread got me thinking.

Could you get a Remington 700 Pistol and drop it in a chassis and slap a Sig Arm Brace on it and have a 10-12" barrel??

No reason to. Form 1's are running under a month and aren't those sig braces almost $200?

LTR chopped to 16.5 with a P stock until I decide on something better.

Just a quick question? I was under the impression you couldn't thread an ltr because of the flutes? Who did the work and what thread pitch did you have done? 5/8x24?

Sweet rig - I didn't realize that the turn around times were so short now.

BTW is that the .223 or .300 AAC (which twist rate and velocity are you getting)? Is it a 10.5" barrel?

Its a 223 with a 7 twist.
I run the 80 amax at 2550.
It's a factory manners stock I picked up used and cut the forend off.
It's right at 16" with the can so the barrel is 12.5" with the brake.

My latest editon. Tikka Varmint cut down to 18", hydro dipped factory stock. Pic was with my Nikon 56mm on it have since changed it to my 50mm Swarvo 4-16.

I came very close to getting the 16" SPS instead of the 20" I ended up with. For convenience sake, I think the 16" is hard to beat–especially if you have to clear your way to a hide. Plus, I think they look pretty cool. IMHO

Is the 308 the best suited round to run in a shorter barrel? Thinking of having a lightweight 18" barreled 308 built for hunting purposes.

In my limited experience–you bet. I did a tour in the Afghan mountains hauling a 5.56 around while a couple of my guys who were acting as the DMs carried the ol' trusty M-14, which of course is the 7.62/.308. I would have traded my M4 in on the 14 without ever looking back if I had been given the choice. Unfortunately medics don't usually have the option to haul that bad boy around. It's not a 30-06 so it won't beat the crap out of your shoulder but it's got way more umph than small pea shooters like the .223. The 16.5" SPS AAC-SD in .308 is definitely on my gun bucket list due to its maneuverability and versatility. For what it's worth brother.

You sure that 5.56mm was the problem or were guys just missing? I have two friends with kills at 900m using Mk12s, one was issued an M110 and a Mk13 also and left them in the case the whole time.

If you have the mk262 ammo I can see leaving the m110/mk13. However, I'd take the m110/mk13/M14 EBR with m118lr over any 5.56 with just the m855 ball (specific mission requirements not withstanding).

Oh hell, I'll cheat a bit. Actual barrel length is 18.5, so I'm a bit over on this thread, but I can't resist the urge to pimp the new rifle a bit, so here we go:

100_2116.jpg

100_2115.jpg

100_2117.jpg

Getting into the 2580's with 175 SMK's and 178 AMAX's, in the 2830 range with 155 Scenars.
Is that a one piece chassis?

What stock and barrel profile would you all suggest for an 18" barreled 308? I am a big fan of Manners and love the adjustable cheek on the T4A but something a little lighter would be nice. Plan would also entail having the muzzle threaded for a brake/can, so I would need it to be big enough in diameter for that correct?

That I understand, though most report Mk262 being easier to obtain than M118LR and most of the M14s fielded used delinked ball.

Thanks. It's a .308. Not many long shots or much wind here. Wish a 223 conversion would come out.

I finally put on my 16.5" barrel. It's a switch barrel setup built by RWS and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. I plan on working up a load and shooting it next weekend so I'm ready for some coyote hunting.

Resurrecting this great thread. 6.5 blank is on the way, hoping to have a 16.5" shorty 6.5x47L by the end of august.

Here's the 20" 308 as it sits.

Did you get the weight of the EH1 mini chassis vs the T4 mini chassis?
Looks good by the way.

Thanks TJ. Yeah it saved a 1lb. Of course bedding, with aluminum DBM, would've saved more. Mini-chassis is pretty much 10 ounces or .62lbs, that puts it almost exactly at 2.5lbs, a pound less than the T4. The bartlein blank behind it is the same contour (sendero/varmint) planning on starting it at 18 with heavy spiral flutes, plus an LRHS, i think i should meet my goal of 10-12lbs, obviously leaning toward the heavier side of that spectrum with the can. Hard to argue with the mini-chassis for the price when the stock would be 675$ out the gate, quality DBM is going to run 275$+, then bedding 250$+, then i also didn't have to wait for it to be built, which is a huge reason i put the T4 up.

I checked the Mini-chassis when i got home thought it would fit the Timney 2-stage but it still doesn't. That safety pivot pin that goes in and out when actuating the safety is still binding. So now i'm thinking i'm going to either put a relief cut in it myself or sell the timney and just move to a single stage triggertech.
