Will it work? The ballistic program said it will be moving at 1136.5 at 1000 yards, so it should work..... Unless I am missing something.

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

That sounds like G1-BC data.

From my experience 168gr AMAX @ 2680fps will get out to ~950yds (maybe alittle more). Beyond that I cannot make linear corrections. When I'm shooting to 1Kyds, it's a Hail Mary. Sometimes I get lucky.

As stated, Density Altitude will impact how the bullet flies.

This is from a 1:12" twist barrel. The 168gr does get out beyond 1Kyds but not accurate enough (>1moa) for my purposes.

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

The 168, while fine for 800 yards) is simply not the right bullet for 1000 yards shooting. Use a 175 SMK or one of the modern 155 PALMA bullets.

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

I think 800 yards will be the most I would need out of my 308. It's a Rem 700 SPS-V cut to 20.5", bedded in an HS VS stock and holds sub 1/2 MOA out to 600 yards so far. I just picked up a Leupold MK4 10x40 M3 with BDC knobs for the 168 smk at 2600 fps. The ballistics on the knob match what I have confirmed to 600 yards and looks like it will match to 800. I am building a 260 that will be topped with my NXS for further distances. I am limited to 168 FGMM ammo for my 308 for duty, which is why I am stuck on it.

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

Ran some 168FGMM outa my 20" SPR a few weeks ago. Chrono'd like 2640fps. Ran it down the range on steel, every 100yds. Did fine to 750, made it to 800(26moa dialed), but fell off alot after that...hitting dirt in front of 900yd target with 30moa dialed. Ran outa those factory rounds. Did alright to 800!

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

I think 800 is a good distance for a light(er) weight, short barrelled 308 duty rifle. If I were not planning on a 260 build for personal shooting and maybe some comps, I might try working up some other loads for it.

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

None of this discussion makes much sense without altitude and temperature included in the reports.

That speed, at or above 3,000 ASL and above 50 F, would probably make it to 1,000 without:

A. Going subsonic (really bad, groups can scatter even in no wind;

or (and this is sometimes more important)

B. Going much into the transonic range, which is Mach 0.8 through 1.2 according to most of my sources. Turbulence in that zone makes all bullets get a lot more wind drift, and sometimes can make the more pointy or back-heavy ones spin off-axis.

I've seen no bullet-specific information on which ones can go down to Mach 1.1 without getting hinky. I'd love to test it myself but taking the time to do it reduces the fundage to do it.

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

Depends on how badly the barrel scars up the bullet.
Seen some factory barrels not do it, some will. Most finished barrels would let that bullet make the trip, but there are much better bullet choices that could be made.

+1

this is the rule, there are exceptions, but why not learn from others past pains?

Re: 168 BTHP @2670 fps to 1000 yards?

I don't usually shoot much past 750 with my 308s, but one day I was bored and tried it. 168smk at 2690 out of a rem 5R lands HP first regularly at 950 yds in the following conditions. Altitude is 485 ft and the temp was in the mid 60's, humidity was in the 40% range. It took 36.5 moa from a 200 yd zero and scored 10 out of 15 hits on a 14x14 steel plate. The misses were due to wind and I could spot those pretty easy in the berm directly to the right of the target, not 8 ft in ftont or above or to the sides like a tumbling bullet would. JBM was close to bullet traj., as long as I fed it a G1 bc of .410 instead of .447 as my sierra manual suggests. Windage at that range is 10.5 moa for a F.V. 10 mph. The second rifle is a savage with douglas 24" no taper barrel, the load was the same, but not chronoed yet in this barrel. Zeroed @ 200 it took 33 moa to make it at 950yds with 5 rds going into a 9"w x6"t group. The wind was blowing decently and was holding off 2 mils to the right. Normally I use my 243 for playing at this range and it does it alot better in regards to windage and elevation required. I do not have access to 1000 yds with a berm. My range is set for 750, but from a hill backed up I can go 950. Anymore then that and I am on the other side of the slope.
