175 SMK & 175 Berger match hunting?

Re: 175 SMK & 175 Berger match hunting?

Rather than speculate, why not run a JBM table on them, using G7 BC's? All the 308 Win fired 175's should yield similar if not identical max velocities and pressures, but not always with the exact same powder charge.

First 175 SMK @ 2650 FPS

1000 Yds Drop -11.4 Mils -39.0 MOA Drift 3.0 Mils 10.4 MOA

Next, 175 Gr Berger VLD also @ 2650 FPS (note the Berger Target and Hunting VLD's have identical G1 and G7 BC's)

1000 Yds Drop -10.9 Mils -37.5 MOA drift 2.8 Mils 9.6 MOA

Finally, the best performing 175 Gr Target Bullet, the Berger 175 LRBT @ 2650 FPS

1000 Yds -10.6 Mils -36.5 MOA Drop 2.7 Mils 9.1 MOA

Now you decide,

Re: 175 SMK & 175 Berger match hunting?

If you use the NON VLD Bergers the numbers will be just a little better than the SMK.

VLDs are a different animal. Comparing apples to oranges.

Re: 175 SMK & 175 Berger match hunting?

Victor,

Sorry, I sort of lost your logic train. Could you restate what your trying to say.....

For example in 308 caliber:

175 grain Sierra SMK G7 0.243

Berger 175 Grain LRBT (non-VLD) G7 0.264

Berger 175 Grain VLD G7 0.255

The non-VLD Berger in this case has a higher G7 than the VLD. Generally the VLD's show a greater G7 than the Non-VLD's of the same weight.

However this is not the case with Berger's 6mm 105's, and 30 cal 155, 175's, 185 grain bullets. In those weights the LRBT (non-VLD's) have a higher G7 BC than the VLD counterpart....

Re: 175 SMK & 175 Berger match hunting?

I'm going by field experience, not computer numbers on this one. FOR ME, I can with very slight powder changes, switch the 175 SMK for the Berger NON-VLD 175s.

Having personally inspected litteraly thousands of these two specific projectiles, I can say with out a doubt that the Bergers were made with a better quality control process in place. I have shot many of them at 1,000 yards. Late in the evening, (when the wind is less) the Bergers will give you slightly smaller groups.

I have a friend that shoots the VLD bullets almost exclusively in matches. He won't admit to it, but I have witnessed him tuning the load length the day before a match. In my opinon, and that's all it is, the VLDs will change flight characteristics with as little as 10% humidity change. And are a pain in the butt to tune for. But they are a real hum-dinger of a bullet. They will stay super sonic longer witch relates to farther down the range.

I'm not sure I answered your questions. But you have my opinion. I hope that helps.

Re: 175 SMK & 175 Berger match hunting?

Victor,

Yes, I now understand your previous comments. And I also agree that VLD's are a PITA to tune a load for, which is why I also prefer Berger's non-VLD's.

Thanks,

Bob
