175 SMK for 300 RUM

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

They will certainly come out the end, but that case has so much capacity to push bigger bullets that the 175's are likely going to have issues staying intact during flight.

It is also a shear waste of a barrel IMO. You have something that can throw 210 class bullets at 3200+ fps. Why would you put the 175's in there and risk blowing them up, killing the barrel quickly, and having a lower performance load with the 175gr bullets?

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

Two reasons to run 175 SMK in my 300 RUM would be.
1. Stock up on 0ne bullet for both calibers (308 & 300RUM)
2.The 300 RUM loves 180 gr bullets they give the best numbers(fly flat hit hard) and I want energy on inpact not just getting there.

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

You can run the 175's. One of my shooting buddies runs 165's in his all the time with absolutely no problem. He is running at full charge also. I do agree that the 300 RUM is best suited for the heavier bullets. I prefer the 240 SMK in mine.

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

I have reciently started loading for my 300 RUM. I started with 185 VLD's, only because Cabelas did not have any heavies. I loaded up some 175's since I have 1000 SMK's and getting ready to get another 2000, so I thought I would try them. At 100 yards I had 3 groups under 1/2" loaded with 92g H1000.

I am not to worried about the barrel right now. It is a new Sendero II, and once this barrel is shot out, I will be puting on a better barrel. Then, I will worry about the barrel life.

But the 175's are flying good.

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

I am running a Sendero also and like I said it loves 180 factory stuff. The energy with the 180 beats all others until way out there and the heavy stuff never really runs away from them.Buying 1 bullet really is what Im after but which one for both was the question. 175 SMK never let me down and I think it will remain my 30 cal go to bullet.

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

You sure about that?

A 240 SMK starts at about 4500 FPE with a 2900fps MV. The 175 SMK starts at about 4650 FPE with 3450 MV

By 1000yd the 175 is packing 1230 FPE, the 240 is still packing 1650, about 30% more.

I don't doubt they shoot, but for the barrel life it will last, does having 1 bullet really make that much of a difference for 2 drastically different performance levels?

Do you use just 1 powder for them too?

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

For what its worth I have shot the 175 SMK out of my 300 WSM with excellent accuracy (out to 1000 yards). I was pushing them at 3050 fps. Powder was IMR4350.
I do agree with use of heavier bullets with the 300 mags (especially 300 RUM) - just had a bunch of the 175s and was curious how they'd work.

Re: 175 SMK for 300 RUM

Yeah, that makes a lot more sense with your findings when you only look at the 200 SMK.

Some others you can run numbers through JBM with are the 208 Amax and 225 Hornady OTM bullet that just came out. The 225 BTHP has a higher BC than the 240 by a few % and you're likely going to get another 50-75fps from shooting that instead of the 240 SMK. The energy and trajectory may actually work out better on the 225 than the 240. I don't know, that's just a suggestion to run some tests in JBM.
