175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

no problem, even in an 18" barrel - 4064, varget, R-15 any should do it

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

TY.....Chrono'd out of a 1/12 twist? Generally, I study the Sierra data, adjust charges and go from there, since I don't chrono.

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

Start with 42.5gr of Varget and work up in 0.5gr increments to find what your rifle likes. Seat the bullets long @ 2.865"

My AIAW is 1 in 12. It handles even the 190 SMK but loves the 175 SMK.

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

I shoot 175 SMKs over 44.5 gn Varget (compressed) in Lapua fire-formed brass with CCI-BR2 primers out of a stock PSS 24 inch 1:12. I seat to the ogive (2.224 at the 0.300 datum) which usually comes out to about 2.810 OAL. I get around 2620 fps out of this load and it's supersonic past 1000 yds according to ballistics programs (I've only got 600 to shoot and it does fine).

I'm curious as to how that would be compressed. I shoot the same load using BH Match brass and the powder only comes to the shoulder. I load to 2.800 and you can hear the powder if you shake the loaded rounds so it's definitely not compressed. Are the walls that much thicker in Lapua brass?

Yes. Lapua has some of the thickest cases I've used--even thicker than some milspec 7.62 cases.

They are just barely compressed with SMKs. With 178 A-Max (everything else being identical except seating depth(1)) you can really feel the powder crushing when seating. I use pretty much the same load for 178 A-Max and get identical ballistics out to 600 yds.(2)

1. A-Maxes seated to 2.186 ogive (0.300 datum). Gives about a 2.215 OAL.

2. Shooter for Android.

I've never had to seat any Sierras long. They have always shot better for me when jumping. Sierra takes that into account when designing. Tangent ogive allows for that. That's straight from Sierra. I have a 243 Win jumping .065 with 95 SMK and 308 Win jumping .065 with 168 SMK and both are sub .7 @ 100 yds. Excellent for factory barrel.

This is my exact load for my 700sps varmint. When doing my load tests it shot .3 for 5 shots. It's consistent out to 1k. I never chrono'd the load but it takes about 11 mil to get from 100 to1000

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

1-12 twist is no problem with the 175's I run them with 45 gr of varget .03 off the lands in winchester brass and they shoot great to 1000yds in F class matches.

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

175gr SMK on top of H4895 shoots super consistant. Shot a 189, 7X at a 1,000 yard match with the above powder/bullet combo out of a lapped/bedded SPS. No other rounds out if the gun before that day. Not bad for a $450 gun...

The reloading depot is where lots of loads are posted. Try

(sorry, can't make it hot from the phone.) Pages and pages of loads, lots of 175 SMKs.

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

I used them for a while in my SPS Varmint before switching to the the Hornady 178s but they perform the same. Always got great results. I've been using 44.4gr of Varget and Win cases loaded to magazine length. I've taken the Hornadys out to 700, 800 and 1000 yards. I need to measure the 700 yard group but it looked about 8".

Re: 175 SMK out of Rem 700 SPS Varmint

My R700 XCR Compact tactical 20" in .308win also come with factory 1:12"tw barrel.

No problem for bullet.

Same here, 2650fps in my 26" varmint and just a couple under 2550fps from my 20" tactical, both loaded to 2.825 mag friendly inches.
