Hello All,

Not sure where this would go, so I'm starting here. On an AR 308 Precision Rifle platform shooting 175 SMK's @ about 2600 - 2650 FPS do you believe this would work for shooting steel out to 800 meters?

Thanks

Absolutely. People have literally used a similar combination for decades. With that velocity, you might be giving up a little bit to a higher BC bullet, particularly from 800 to 1000 yd, but even there it will still work just fine.

You will be plenty fine. Even 1000+ no problem.

Dont get me wrong, you will stomped on buy 185 grainers going 2800 if you are up against bolt guns some day, but they will hit just fine.

Add about .8 mil to your info after you stop being super sonic and you should be fine out to a mile.

I shoot 175 SMK's to 1K at 2700 fps with no problems. You should do fine.

Thank You All for your help in your answers. I was pretty sure it would at least by the numbers, confirmation is always a plus. Great Labor Day Weekend to all.

My `175 SMK load is 2600 fps out of my rifle.

Hit the steel at 1200 yards at Dan Newberry's Bang Steel course.

I built an AR10-like rifle with a Kreiger 20-inch barrel. My standard load (LC LR brass, 41.0 gr 4064, 175 SMK) goes 2,500 fps out of that barrel. I was shooting steel at 700 yesterday -- so yeah, it will work. My bolt gun doesn't shoot as fast as the AR - it was fun hitting 12-inch plate while shooting fast.

My bolt action I have at 2650 FPS. I shoot 175 FGGM 7.62X51 out of a SIG 716 at 2525 FPS. Both shoot very well out to 800 yds. The bolt I shoot out to 1200 all the time.

Running a quick calculation of a 175 SMK at 2700: 800yd 1430 FPS, 900yd 1310 FPS, 1000 yd 1210 Fps. You will be just fine at 800 yds, past that things will get iffy. Its quite common when shooting a Palma match (800, 900, 1000) for everyone's factory rifles and ammo to do well at 800, start to come apart at 900 and have the wheels fall off at 1000; bullets hit the target, some are in the middle but groups open up as you are right at the transonic range. velocity data from JBM ballistics.
