178 amax in a 1 in 12 twist????

Re: 178 amax in a 1 in 12 twist????

It would depend mostly on the barrel itself, which is a constant; and the temperature, which is a variable.

Bearing surface, not weight, determines twist rate (although bearing surface and bullet weight are related).

The AMAXs are not built like the sleeker VLDs, so I doubt you will have any trouble with them.

Re: 178 amax in a 1 in 12 twist????

I have a remington 700 with 1 in 12 twist and the load of choice out to 800+ meters is HSM 178 Amax.
It might not give you stellar 100 yard groups like 186 fgmm, but for way out there is seems to be the ticket for me.

Re: 178 amax in a 1 in 12 twist????

No,the 178 Amax seems to be what my rifle likes out to 1k without issue. A stock 700 VLS 26 inch tube. My handloads are pushing 2750-2775 same as Hornadys super performance without any high pressure signs.

Cool spreadsheet. I have always wondered about the OP's question but for the 175 SMK instead of the 178 Amax. I have an M700 with a 1:12 barrel and have read many claims that 175 is at the upper edge of the envelope for this twist rate. Here are my inputs:

.308, 175gr, 1.235" bullet height, 1:12 twist, 29.92 inHg

Min:
2600fps MV @ 60 deg F -- Sg = 1.69

Max:
2850fps MV @ 90 deg F -- Sg = 1.84

It is suggested that you move to a faster twist if Sg > 2.0. Looks like 175gr is well within the range of a 1:12, according to this calculation, anyway.

Re: 178 amax in a 1 in 12 twist????

Spreadsheets are cool but real world trumps them every time. The only way to know for sure is to try it. I had my first 12 twist barrel that shot the 175s just fine and then went to my next barrel and it wouldn't shoot them until they were above 2675fps. Since then I have only put on 10 or 11 twist barrels on my .308.

Buy a box and try them. Only way you will know for sure.

Re: 178 amax in a 1 in 12 twist????

As stated above, your results may vary due to your rifle/barrel. I shot 175 and 190 SMK thru a 1 in 12 twist AIAE MKII without any issue. In face, the 190 shot better in that particular instance than the 175.
Follow Rob01's advice and just try some. But, IMHO, you must take them past the 100 yard mark (at least 300 yds) to know for sure.

Re: 178 amax in a 1 in 12 twist????

Real world is only as good as the amount of data you can gather. Is OP shooting at sea level or at 1,500 feet? Deserts of Arizona or in high humidity of southeast? The calculator lets you input multiple variables and provides accurate output on what you can expect. Why waste time testing a bullet that may be marginal. Not saying the one the OP asked about is, I didn't do the numbers. You can spend a lot of bullets and time testing loads. I think it makes sense to use the tools available to narrow things down to one or two that should work well and working those up.

Works well in my 700P 1 in 12 with 4064.
