Hello all, just wondering if anybody has any experience using the amax bullets on deer sized game? I like the way they shoot out of my 300 win mag, but have never used for deer. If they are strictly a paper bullet, what bullet would you recommend for mule deer? I want a bullet that will perform out to 1000 yards if need be. Thanks for any input.

It would not be my first choise for hunting anything over a deer size. For Moose I use the Barnes MTX for my Lapua, Flys great and I think they do a 30 cal high BC, also I think Berger is doing a High BC hunting pill now.

Re: 178 gr amax for hunting

In 2000 I shot an antelope with a 178 a max out of a 308 bear. Shot through the shoulder and turned to soup on the inside. A max will come apart after penetration. Thin jacket. He dropped dead at about 275 yrds. Killed a mule deer this year with a 30-338 win mag shooting a 180 grain nosler ballistic tip. It made a big hole on both sides of the shoulder. Looked like he was smacked down by the hand of God. The a max didn't give me that expanded mushroom tissue destruction I like to see but it did the job. It's all about shot placement and bullet function. Any bullet will kill when put in the right spot, the question is when will it kill. I like them to kill here and now. I choose a bullet that is accurate and functions. Nosler ballistic tips for big game and sierra game kings have worked very well for me in the past.
