18” 308 AR-10

Quick question for you, I’m going to run Some 178 ELD-x and was wondering what would be the better powder for the higher velocity in that 18”?? I haven’t ran anything over a 168, but I’m back in Texas and can shoot a lot farther now.

Just loaded a bunch of 178 grain ELDX for my 18" Aero precision rifle. I use 39.5 grains of Varget and cci primers

I will try that too, I have that powder on hand as well. My S&W MP 10 didn’t like the varget with the 168, but it might like it with the 178. Picky rifle I have . LOL

I run 40.5 of Varget in my 16", but not a very hot load. could run them faster

I run 40.1g of IMR4064 with federal brass, fed 210M and 175 smk in my SR25 and get 2515 fps out of a 18.5” barrel...I imagine the 178s will like something within a couple tenths if that. I tested as high as 41g of imr 4064 and that charge weight produced .75-1.00 inch groups and low double digit SD. However it proved to be too much as I was getting excessive bolt speed and some ejector marks on the brass.

Heres my group with 39.5 grains of Varget. Got a .325" 3 shot group and .713" with the flyer.

That’s a nice group, I have gotten some sub MOA with the 168, and .25 MOA with some Nosler 125 grain. But that’s real good and I hope to achieve the same. Nice work??
