After spending some great range time with my SA 1911 Loaded Operator, I've got a few ideas for upgrading it. I'd like to replace the grips to reduce slippage during hot summer days shooting. Right now I've got the stock checkered wooden grips, and I'd like to know what you gents who shoot IPSC and IDPA use.

Secondly, my pistol doesn't like light SWC loads. Either the recoil spring is too hot, or it has issues with SWCs, but the second to last round often gets hung up on the extractor and won't pop out the round. Should I simply pump up the powder charges on the SWCs or get a lighter recoil spring? Would the lighter spring still be ok to properly cycle combat loads for home defense?

Finally, I was thinking of putting some grip tape along the side to aid in racking the slide. Will that damage the coating on the slide, or should the coating be able to handle the grip tape without any issues?

Thanks for the help.

Re: 1911 accessory questions

Recoil spring is not "too hot." It sounds like your extractor needs tuning. A heavier recoil spring typically increases reliability. A lighter one does the opposite.

Re: 1911 accessory questions

ive seen alot of guys with grip tape on the slides. i dont think there is anything the adheasive can do to the steel really or the coating.

i recall something about the SWC from reading stuff... i think it was about feed ramps and SWC compatability. someone will chime in im sure

also, Wolff makes springs in 1 pound weight increments so you should be able to tune that way

What is the load you are shooting now?
Does it lock the slide back after the last round with these loads?
Are there any feeding problems or just ejection?

The recoil spring is tuned to the load you intend to shoot, so yes, a spring setup for a light load will be too light for a defense load.

Re: 1911 accessory questions

I'm using 8.0gr of AA #5 behind the 200gr SWCs. I don't understand why the FTE happens on the second to last round with so much consistency. The fired brass will come all the way back but it won't eject, then the slide goes forward with the fired brass ramming into the rim of the last cartridge in the mag. Then it's a complex malfunction that requires more that just racking the slide to fix it. I think I need to pump the load up to 8.7 gr of AA #5, which is the max load. I don't have hardly any problems with factory ammo, so the problem must be with me.

Re: 1911 accessory questions

I also suggest a faster powder. AA #5 is good stuff, but faster powder will give you the target velocity you desire, and still run your gun.

Re: 1911 accessory questions

I'm using Wilson Combat mags, and at $35 a pop, those damn things better be working right. Feeding problems aren't there, and the slide is locking back IF there's not an ejection problem.

Any powder recommendations for better 45 performance?

Re: 1911 accessory questions

For target loads, I shoot Bullseye. 4gr under a 200gr SWC gets me around 750 fps. These are very accurate in my long slide and primarily used for bulseye matches.

I used Winchester 231 for other types of shooting with either the 200gr SWC or a 230gr LRN.

I have used Clays for years. 4.3 behind a 200 grainer was my load when I was using the 200s.

I've since changed to 230s. I use 3.6-3.7 grains of Clays.
