I have Robert Gradious building my first tactical rifle so that the first step out of the way. Now for the scope. I am on the fence between a S&B or a March. One thing I am not sure of if I should buy one in a 1st or 2nd plane.

I will be shooting at 100, 300 and 600 yard targets

Would any one know where I can see some pictures/examples of both showing what they look like both at low and high magnification. I have researched and read a lot about this subject but I am more of a visual person

I am trying to do this build from out of the country so it will be ready for me when I return to the states next year. When I get home I just want to shoot before le for my next assignment

Re: 1st and 2nd Plane

If those are your only two choices I'd buy a S&B and be happy. They're built hell for stout, they have a good track record almost all the way around, and they hold their value extremely well if you decide you don't like it down the road. In regards to FFP or SFP well that depends on you and if you plan to shoot tactical rifle competitions where a FFP could come in handy, it's not absolutely necessary but it helps. I'm also not sure of what your magnification preferences are but S&B makes several flavors from 3-12 to 5-25 and beyond. Of course there isn't much you can't do with a S&B 5-25X56 w/ mrad knobs and a P4F reticle.

Look in the field photography forum. There is a thru the scope thread in there. You'll see reticles from all different types of scopes, may help you decide if you want FFP or SFP.

Re: 1st and 2nd Plane

Here are some pics I took at a 400 yard target. Left target is about 12"x17" and the round target is 8". The hashmarks at 5x are a little easier to see in person than on the pic. I am not good at taking pics through the scope. This is with a S&B 5-25x56 with P4F reticle. Excellent scope if you decide on first focal plane for the scope.

Re: 1st and 2nd Plane

The S&B 5-25x56 is a great scope all around, I'd agree with getting the P4f as I got the P4 on mine and at 25x the crosshairs are a bit too much on 1000yrd targets, the P4f would be a bit harder to see at low magnification settings but well worth it at full power.

I used to think that FFP scopes were nice to have but not a nessecity, I am quickly changing that opinion. I'm looking out for an F1
