Hey everyone a work friend is currently a Fremont County, CO resident... looking to get together stateside and go hunting for some Bull elk in Gunnison county, any suggestions on good public land to hunt preferably in north east Gunnison County? We're planning on hunting 3rd season Monday-Friday because that's when we're all back from overseas.. so somewhere possibly less populated by other public land hunters...THANKS

I dont hunt that area, hopefully someone will PM you some leads, as it is rare for folks to give up their sweet spots.

While you are overseas, you can peek out this website. I believe you will be hunting 551, so you can select it from the drop down and look at the state lands, BLM and whatnot. Looks like plenty of forrest so pretty much most is accessible.

The legends have migration patterns, winter and summer for Elk, deer and other big game.

Good luck on your hunt

Colorado Hunting Atlas

I just saw the Gunnison post but i am further south west. I am headed to 66 this year! hope you fare well! I am getting anxious to get out on the mountain! The atlas that is posted above seems to be an exceptional piece of information. using that I would see if you could get a Game unit map. This way you can make an educated decision on where you would like to start off and already have it plotted out! but in the end feet on the ground and understanding the unit will pay off for future hunts. Good luck!

I spent a year in Gunnison going to school at Western State College. If your into fly fishing hit up the Taylor river right below the reservoir. It's only open for about a 1/4-1/2 mile then goes private land. Its catch and release only though. There are mysis shrimp in the reservoir and they go through the damn and is a buffet for the trout. They have rainbows over 20lbs in there. The biggest I took was around 15lbs depending on what weight formula you use. 32" long with a girth of 18.5". A lot of fun I was catching 5lb trout everyday I was up there. I use to fish the upper streams above the reservoir and had to stop during hunting season cause there were a lot of people up there. I would be in the creek and could see the blaze orange all around the edges of the meadows so thought it would be a good idea to not be up there anymore in brown waders fly fishing with a tan vest.... lol .... Hope you have a great time in some of the most beautiful country. In the canyon there are a lot of big horn sheep too....
