I can relate. It's a shame, too, because there's so much Americana wrapped up in that sport, going all the way back to the War Between the States. Of an evening, they sometimes would stop battles on account of impending darkness, then Billy Yank and Johnny Reb would face off in a game of "base" until it got too dark to see.
And so much of our slang comes from the game. And it has one quintessentially American aspect. If you play baseball, no matter your position on the field or spot in the batting order, so long as you remain in the game, at least every third inning, you have a chance to be the star. You get to bat (unless you're a pitcher playing in a league with designated hitters, which is an abomination before G-d).
