2 Marines Killed in AH1 Crash

The AH-1Z is hardly a 60 year old copter. The AH-1 concept has been around for quite some time, yes, but the Zulu model is a heavily updated variant with a four-blade rigid rotor system as opposed to the two-blade semi-rigid system used on older models. It's a relatively recent, major upgrade to the model.

As a fellow aviator, this kind of news is devastating, but let's allow the investigation to take place before we start laying blame on anything or anyone in particular.

I am still a bit surprised they have not moved over to the more recent AH64. whats the main driver for flying this 60 year old copter?

Dam shame.

Simple, they work.

I joined the Warrant Officer program to fly Apaches but couldn't (my head was too big for any of the whiz-bang helmets they had) so I ended up flying AH-1 Prods and F models. I was thankful because I found out the '64s were maintenance nightmares. Some of the saddest people you will ever meet are Apache maintenance test pilots.

meh, they are blessed we give them tax money to do some incredible blowing shit up stuff,,, who here doesn't look back and think about blowing shit up for free with your buddies and say ah whatever the risk yep it was worth it, not to mention the sheer frikken excitement of it.

Not trying to lay blame I was just wondering why they were flying the AH1 vs the 64 was thinking it was maybe a size thing to fit them on the boats.. or a money thing

Because snake copters are cooler than Indian named ones.

I dont know what model they were flying in 1987 when I did my predeployment CAX but if they have improved on that one its nothing I want to be on the receiving end of.

Yes the mil is fortunate to be able to do cool shit on the expense account of the tax payer.

Its unfortunate that that great gift is given to the young that fail to fully appreciate the experience.

Being able to do a CAX today, with the wisdom of age now upon me, I would be in pure joy as opposed to that 19 year old me upset that while freezing my ass off I was burdened by sunburns that made it feel my face was going to melt off.

You know life is good when you and the platoon spend the night of a califax figuring new ways to blow up new shit,,,, knowing you gotta use all your ordinance now matter what the fuck else if happening because i guess its against the law of real men to turn in unfired or unblown up ordinance,,, I was lucky enough to realize it at the time,,, I got to invite my brothers and family out to watxh the real good shit one time.

I've got to partake in and witness Pershing 2 missiles B52s on down to M16 at many many night Califaxes in Irwin.
