All,

Here is the information below.

Greetings, Quarter Circle 42 is putting on the 4th annual steel challenge match. The match will take place on the 19th of May 2012. Like last year’s event there will be shooting stations with many challenging targets. In addition to the stations there will be other known distance event that will be timed using paper and steel targets with limited exposure. All un-known distance targets will have an orange marker within a 10 foot radius of the target to identify the location. Each shooting station will have multiple targets in different target configurations and degrees of difficulty, some targets will be partially camouflaged. It will be the responsibility of the shooting team to locate, identify, range estimate and engage each target within a time limit to accumulate a score.

Teams will be expected to have everything that they intend to shoot with on them. Like last year all shooters will be transported up the hill. Transport will begin at 0700 on the day of the shoot. Once the safety brief has been given there will be no further opportunity to obtain any additional gear from your vehicles, other shooters (outside of the shooting team), spectators or by-standards of any kind. You dance with the date you brought!!

Match Location / Date.
The match is scheduled for Saturday, May 19th 2012. The location for this match will be in Kettle Falls, WA. Specific location will be given to the attending shooters once they have registered and are confirmed. This is done to eliminate any on-lookers that may cause unnecessary distractions. Directions will be sent to each competitors email address once the registration form has been received. All forms must be in by close of business Pacific Standard Time by April 4th 2012.

Match Fee’s.
The Match fees will be $90.00 USD per shooter. T-Shirts will also be available for purchase for the match as well @ $20.00 per shirt. Proceeds will be donated to Camp Patriot. For more information about Camp Patriot look for them on the internet at www.camppatriot.org

Match Sign In.
Early sign in will be from 1600 to 1700 on May 18th 2012 (location to be determined) and at 0600 to 0700 on May19th 2012 at the match location. All competitors must be signed in prior to the safety brief @ 0800 the day of the match. If competitors fail to sign in by 0700 May 19th 2012 applicants from the waiting list will be called forward to fill your slot. This is a charity shoot and no refunds will be given. Failure to register will result in a forfeiture of your entry fee which in turn will be an additional donation.

Accommodations.
There will be some camp sites available. These sites or on a 1st come 1st serve basis. Notification will follow in order of receiving registration form. Camp sites are dry camps i.e. no hook ups for septic, water or power.

Targets.
All steel targets will have a maker within a ten foot radius. A general reference of each target will be given to the shooters in a chronological order from the shooting station RSO. A range card with target locations will be given to each team once they reach the shooting station. Multiple targets will be located at each shooting station.
There will be at least one target at each shooting station that will require the shooting team to acquire the range to that target with the reticle in their optics. The aid of a laser range finder on the pre-designated target will result in a zero score for that shooting team at that shooting station.

Caliber & Other Restrictions.
This match will be limited to .300 win mag and lower. If your rifle has a muzzle brake you will need to bring a shooting mat to absorb the blast.

Round Count
The course of fire will be a maximum of 120 rounds.

Time Limits.
Once the RSO has given the command to begin, there will be a 10 minute time limit to engage all targets at each shooting station. For example, if there are three targets at a given shooting station the shooting team (both shooters) will have a combined time of ten minutes to work shooting solutions to the targets and engage those targets within that ten minute time limit. The shooters will have four attempts to hit each individual target at each shooting station. If it takes longer than the allotted time to engage the targets, one point will be deducted off the overall score in fifteen second intervals from the overall score at that shooting station. If there are no attempts to hit any one of the targets at any shooting station all points for that station will result in a negative score. This will mitigate “gaming” the time issue.

In the event that the RSO has any distractions or reason to call a cease fire, time will be paused to ensure that the team at that station is allotted the proper time for firing.

Team Movement.
The RSO will instruct the teams what their next shooting station is and when they are cleared to move to that station. This will be done in order to keep track of all teams to ensure the safety of all involved in the match.

Scoring.
Shooters must attempt to hit each target with a minimum of 2 rounds. 4 rounds per target total will be allowed to accomplish this mission.
100% will be given for 1st round and the follow on hit.
75% will be given for 2nd round hits.
50% will be given for 3rd round hits
25% will be given for 4th round hits
Scoring sheet example
STA 1
1st Shooter Atttempts
1 flw on 2 3 4 Total Rnds
Target 1 Mannual Rng 1 1 0 0 0 2
Target 2 0 0 1 0 0 1
Target 3 0 0 0 1 1 2
Target 4 1 0 0 0 0 1
Total Rounds 2 1 1 1 1 6
Percentage 100% 100% 75% 50% 25%
Score 2 1 0.75 0.5 0.25 4.5
2nd Shooter Atttempts
Shooting Station 1 1 flw on 2 3 4
Target 1 Mannual Rng 1 1 0 0 0 2
Target 2 1 1 0 0 0 2
Target 3 1 1 0 0 0 2
Target 4 1 1 0 0 0 2
Total Rounds 4 4 0 0 0 8
Percentage 100% 100% 75% 50% 25%
Score 4 4 0 0 0 8

Prior to engaging each steel target the shooter must verbally confirm with the RSO that he is going to engage a specific target i.e. target # 4. Once the RSO has acknowledged that he is indeed on the same target the shooter may engage the target.
It is entirely up to each team how they are going to engage each target and in what order. (with exception to the mandatory manual ranging target) Who is going to spot and who is going to shoot. However, CLEAR COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE RSO MUST BE GIVEN PRIOR TO EACH SHOT TAKEN IN ORDER TO GET A SCORE.

Communications with the RSO.
Here is an example of communication with the RSO for steel target engagement.
Shooters: Team #3, shooter #2 on Target #5
RSO: RSO on scope Target #5
Once the RSO has confirmed that he is on scope and the correct target the team may engage the target.

Scoring in the event of a tie.
A shoot off will ensue at the discretion of the match director.

Prizes.
Cash prizes will be given to the top three shooters. Additional prizes will also be available. 1st Place $500.00, 2nd Place $250.00, 3rd Place $125.00

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

Carl, the Kettle Falls Mafia, and the RO's did an absolutely outstanding job at the shoot yesterday. While this is the first year I've attended, I plan to attend every year I'm able.

The scenery at the shoot location, are unrivaled. The targets and conditions are challenging, and the competitors are a friendly bunch of folks! Thank you to all who worked so hard to put this shoot together.

This annual shoot benefits Camp Patriot, and you REALLY need to check out the web page if you don't know what the organization is all about:

http://www.camppatriot.org/

I plan to send in a donation for Camp Patriot periodically, and I hope you will too.

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

I have to concur with Dibbs(he was my teammate after all).

Great Match, Greater cause! Carl and all involved did an awesome job putting on this match. Big thanks to all the R.O's who were tough, fair and even entertaining at times! Thanks to the sponsor who provide the booty for the teams that deserved prizes.

Already looking forward to next years match.

I completely agree with Dibbs that this is a very worthy cause. Many thanks to the guys/gals the Camp Patriot helps.

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

For those who don't know me I was one of the guys in the tropical camo.

Great match as usual, had an incredible time. Its great fun for all of us Portland folks to not only get together with each other for such a great event and cause but to get out and meet other shooters that we normally don't get the pleasure to shoot with.

Bit of a drive to get home but as in years past it gives us time to discuss the match and what we can do to prepare for next year already.

Thank you again Carl, Quarter Circle 42, KF Mafia, all the RO's, and everyone involved in putting it on. It is an incredible experience year after year.

+1

The stages were fun, challenging and simply deceiving at times which had me walking away with thoughts waiting to go into my logbook.

The crew is a very welcoming bunch and I too will be waiting for next year!

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

Thanks again for the "date" for the Millers - definitely better than just a dinner & movie night. Best marriage therapy every year! I am a little worried with the addition of helo/boat/mover this round that we will be shooting off the back of a moving camel and roasting pigs for dinner next May to top it. Helo was awesome! We did get video of multiple stages, so will gladly share & post as needed. Can stick them on the SFS website if that is easiest for all.

Could you describe what the numbers mean?
What does column 1 2 and 3 mean?

Shooter number place and score?
Team 1, shooter 1 score, shooter 2 score?

Sorry to be dense.

Thanks again for a great match! It was epic.

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

I think it breaks down like this:

First number is the rank. Second number (or numbers if they have commas i.e. being tied for that place) is the shooter number or numbers (again if more then one person is tied for that place). Last number is the score.

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

Last post has it correct. Emails coming within the hour to all competitors. I couldn't get the forum to interpolate the numbers like they are on the spread sheet.

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

jcvibby won it with some solid shooting. Scores have me a little baffled, pretty sure AlanH and I scored better than posted on several stages, let alone overall.

Did you factor in the scoring system from the entry form? Maybe that's where some of the confusion is coming from.

100% will be given for 1st round and the follow on hit.
75% will be given for 2nd round hits.
50% will be given for 3rd round hits
25% will be given for 4th round hits

Re: 2012 Steel Challenge Kettle Falls, WA

Yeah, but on several stages we shot quite well and on the last stage we shot AlanH cleaned it. Shouldn't that alone give him more than one point? Carl PMd me that he had some trouble with Excel, so... talking to other shooters we figured ourselves to be mid-pack.

Who knows? Still a fun match and I plan to be there next year, plus it's for a great cause.

Updated score sheet emailed from Carl. I've spent a while trying to make the columns all neat, but the forum just stacks 'em back together. As indicated at the the top, far left column is placement, next numbers are shooter number(s), and the last numbers are the score. HTH.
