I am getting things together for a 22-250 Ackley build. Who is shooting these? What kind of velocity can I expect with a 24" 1 in 8 barrel shooting 69 BTHP? I am hoping for something with around 3750-3850. Lets hear your thoughts.
Mine is a 14 twist so I can't shoot the heavy stuff. I'm getting 3800 with 50 gr V-Max's for a fireforming load. I've just been forming up a pile of brass before I work on the fun load. I know that once I start shooting the full power load, I won't want to go back to shooting the fireform loads.
I would say that 3850 would be a little high though if I had to guess. I can't say for sure as I can't shoot them.
Good luck and have fun with it. I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do mine.
a 1/8 22-250AI is just screaming for the 75-80 range pills. Would be a nice small bore 1k setup. I would think 3600+ is doable with the right powder/pill setup.
First I would go to a 26" barrel. Personally I went with a 28" barrel.
I used a Krieger 1in8 twist full bull barrel, at 28".
I stayed with the standard 22-250. I saw no need for the Ackley. If I wanted that extra I would go with a Swift or 22-243.
Personally I lke the 75 grain A-Max bullet. IMO it has substantially better down range abilities over the 69. Check the 75 grain pill out.
From my rifle I can get 3350 from the 22-250. Now that Lapua is making 22-250 brass I might even get another 50 fps if I wanted it. But I am happy at 3350.
You can push the 75 at 3500 with the 22-250AI. But the expense is barrel wear. I know a couple of guys who have them, and they have dropped back to 3400. Anything over that is giving them excessive wear problems. 3600 is too fast for that setup.
I do not believe you will get 3750-3850 with the 69 grain pill, and a 24" barrel. That is pushing it really hard. And with the high BC of the 75 grain A-Max you will see better long range performance with the 75. And anybody shooting a 1in8 is definitely looking for long range performance. Tom.
holy crap that is fast i never pushed the 75's over 3350 with mine. i don't think you are going to get the speeds you are looking for without some serious pressure issues.
