Let me start by saying that I have read about every post and watched every video I could find on chambering a barrel. I had shot out the barrel on my Remington 700 light varminter and decided to rebarrel it myself with a 26" stainless factory takeoff barrel chambered in 223. This is where things got weird. I dialed in the bore using a PTG range rod until I could detect no movement in the test indicators along the length of the rod. Unfortunately, the barrel tennon looked like a rod journal on a 350 chevy crank as it rotated... about .013 out. Obviously the counterbore and chamber followed the tennon. Floating reamer holder or not, this was not going to work. Cutting a new tennon was not an option, so I decided to just indicate off of the tennon and counterbore and hoped that the reamer would eventually find the bore. Naturally I went a couple thousandths too deep with the reamer and had to shave the shoulder to get headspacing correct. When all was said and done, the throat did appear to be centered with the bore by visual inspection. I threw it all in a Houge overmolded stock I had laying around and headed for the range with a fist full of reloads I had developed for the prior barrel. 5 shot groups off a tripod measured 1/2" at 100 yards. God I'm a good gunsmith.
