.223 75gr AMAX

Gents,

Is it possible to run a .223 + 75gr Amax from a rem or tikka mag?

I'd like to seat the base of the bullet forward of the neck shoulder junction but I'm assuming that will negate mag loading.

Is there a go to Mag system that has generous COAL allowances for .223 rem? I'm liking the ballistics of the Amax's but I'm unsure if there is a factory rifle that will accommodate them.

If loading it to the recommended OAl, you won't be able to fit it in the Tikka mag. But I always load it close to the lands anyway, so it's single shot. When I have the chance and money, will probably change the stock to something that would accept a longer OAL round. I heard one gunsmith told to get the 22-250 mag and load them longer. I have not tried that so can't comment on that.

My PSS wouldnt shoot them for crap. It was literally a 2 inch group at 100 yds. It will shoot pretty much a one hole group with 69 SMKs. I try loading them long and everything, I ended up just selling the remainder of what I had left and just shoot SMKs.

first check twist rate.......

75 amax might need a 1:8
I believe the tikkas are, but think the rem 700 models are 1:9 and some of the older ones are 1:12

Tikka should be GTG, but the Remmy may have a tought time stabilizing it.

A 1:9 twist should stabilize them. However, if you want to run them in a Remmy, and be touching lands, you'll likely have to modify the mag box. Remove the spacer in the rear of the mag box, and replace it with a 1/4" thick piece of aluminum, JB welded into place. No need for any change to the follower or spring. this will allow the longer rounds to fit in the mag box.
