How many have done custom 223 tac guns? Im gonna start one next week should be done soon. Remmy carbon steel action with a med palma kreiger to finish at 18.5 inches should be great for 77 factory ammo.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

I'm getting the pieces together to send off to Mike Bush that will be my wifes rifle.

So far the spec stand as follows: McMillan A5 urban-camo, worked over Rem 700s/a, Badger M4 floorplate, requested a 18" oal 1-8" twist recon contour tube and the rest will be Mikes magic finishing it off.

I think this should make a great rifle for the wifey.

    Next.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

A few years ago I had GAP build a 223Rem version of an M40A1 in Italian desert camo. It has a 24", 8:1 twist Rock barrel, Jewell trigger, Badger bolt knob and 20MOA rail, and was a duplicate of the 308 "SCLE" rifle build George did a couple years earlier. It shoots 80SMKs very well. As you might expect, it's not light weight, but I used it effectively on prairie dogs at very long range in WY a few years ago.

Mark Gordon @ SAC put this one together for me. This thing is like a little laser.

The works on the action/bolt, Rock 24" 1:8, Badger, Jewell, AICS, USO, AAC. Base and chassis are bedded. Without the suppressor it's 18.5 lbs.

Mark Gordon at Short Action Customs built this one for me:
Remington 700 223; 1:8 Bartlein, Manners T2 Stock. it is my go to shooter as it is cheap to shoot, very accurate, and looks good too. What else could I ask for?

That is was a .223ai instead...</div></div> I really thought about it but to also with my AR's I decided to stay with the 223.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

It will soon become your favorite rifle! I know mine is. The low recoil, low ammo cost, and darn good ballistics with high BC bullets make for a pleasantly surprising combination.

I would strongly recommend you consider 80 grain bullets instead. The use of the AI's 223 magazines makes it all possible due to the long COAL potential. I'd even be willing to lend you my PT&G chamber reamer if you're interested. It is was made for 80g+ VLDs

On a related note, my little brother shoots 80g SMKs @ 3000 fps out of his 28" McGowen. At our rifle class this year, that little fucker kept up with my 6.5x47mm Lapua shot for shot out to 1060 yards. Impressive! After that, I knew I needed one.

Below is mine. It is an 18" Bartlein in a Light Palma contour

I might take you up on the reamer. I just hate relosding 223 ammo thats why the 77 grain. How is the weaver working if that is what that is?

I have one in the pipeline similar to what you're looking at. Waiting on the Mcmillan Stock and the Brux barrel. Both should be ready any day now. Then it's off to Jon Beanland for the work. Planning on using 80gr JLK's and 75gr AMAX's as well as a sprinkling of factory/handloaded 77gr SMK stuff. Specs as follows:
Stainless 7.7 Twist Brux Barrel in #16 Light Palma Profile
Finished at 18.5 inches & Heavily Fluted (fluting by Brux)
    Surgeon RSR Action w/Aluminum Rail
    Surgeon Bottom Metal
McMillan A1-3 Stock in Edge Construction (right around 24 ounces)
Threaded 1/2X28 for my AAC Ranger II
    Shilen Trigger at 2.5 pounds
SS 5-20X50 HD in Seekins Rings (Although I may have to find a lighter optic for this one. Hate to build a super light rifle and then put a 2 pound scope on top of it)

Just let me know, and I'll send you the blueprint on my reamer, so you can study the specifics. Of course the string attached is that you'll have to send me pictures of your finished rifle!

The Weaver is working great. What a super value for the money. If 15x is enough for you, give this one a hard look.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

I've got one in the works. SPS barreled action cut down to 18", XLR Evolution chassis, SAS suppressor and a NF 5.5-22x50. Just waiting on the cut & thread job and it'll be complete.

That sounds like a great little set up. I know I have been loving my .223 SPS tac in factory form, I can only imagine it getting better with a few quality upgrades like you mention.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

    I have a trued 700 action in a Manners MCS-T with 90%CF, 16.25 Lilja 1:8 twist that's fluted(contour is a 5 I think). Scope is a Leupold 3.5-10 with M5 turrets.

I currently shoot moly 75gr Amax.

    love shooting it.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

I'm waiting on my XLR Evolution chassis to put on my Tikka T3 Varmint in 223 Rem. Pretty much have all the rest of the parts, but still have a one to three week wait before I get it.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

I just took delivery of a Surgeon .223 in an AICS 2.0 with a 24 inch 1:8 Kreiger medium palma contour with a Jewell trigger. Surgeon chambered it tight, and I have previously shot Fiocchi Exacta 77gr. ammo very well in my Tikka T3, it was more accurate than either FGGM or BH 77gr. ammo in my T3. Yesterday, however, with my Surgeon at the range for the first time, the Fiocchi wouldn't chamber, but FGGM, BH and Corbon 77gr. all would. I talked to Surgeon and they said that I would need to use a small base die if I reload and that all brands of .223 ammo may not shoot in it. In addition, I found yesterday that Corbon 69gr. ammo gave me the best groups, but I still have much to learn about the new gun.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

Some nice rifles. I am working on mine. Rem 700. Varment. I want to change out the barrel to 1/9. Not sure which one. Then cut it down to 18in.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

    I was going to.

    I have a Tikka T-3 LH stainless.

I was gonna use that action. MCMillan Stock. New Bottom metal, etc.

But the Rifle (Wearing a new 2-7 Redfield) and Shooting Blackhills Blue Box (re-manufactured) 60 grain V-Maxs is WICKED accurate.

    A 1/2 MOA RiFle to 300 meters.

I gotta stretch it out with some 77 SMKs.

Honestly, I am the limitation on that rifle (and the glass)

So I stopped Planning and started shooting.

One of the best decisions you'll ever make. Cheap, fun, and very accurate.
    Here is mine:
Blueprinted Remington 700SA with a PTG bolt and straight handle, a 20 inch 1.300 1-7.7 twist Kreiger 12 flute barrel threaded for my can, a Timney trigger, an EGW 20 MOA base,CDI bottom metal with AI poly mags, Vortex Viper PST 4-16X50 MIL/MIL EBR1

    Re: 223 bolt guns

I built one mainly to run my suppressor that I had for my Noveske. I was a little doubtful at first but man was I wrong lol. Its a blast to shoot and has virtually no kick once i dropped it in my AICS, you def gonna love it. nice to come home from the range and not need an ice pack lol.

    Re: 223 bolt guns

Well the Kreiger will be here next week, the cans will be here who knows when, the stocks are a phone call away and the gun smith can do it in a few weeks.

    Do tell. </div></div>

All apologies. The dimension I listed is with my comparator. The length of the loaded cartridge only is 2.470", and they fit great inside the 223 version of the Accuracy International magazine.

    This one

Now the question is,where does the 2.470" COAL put you in relationship with your throat, though you've another .030" or so to coax out of the AI mag?
    </div></div>

    It sure reads like Larry . . . you prick. <span style="font-style: italic">(grin)</span>

I had my chamber cut with a PT&G reamer that Dave Kiff helped me spec (print #33145) specifically for 80 grainers . From the print, it looks like this chamber has .1125" of free-bore (if I'm reading it correctly).

My final load with this 80.5g Berger bullet is 0.021" off the lands. And that puts the bullet's body/boat-tail junction just forward of the case's neck/shoulder junction.
