thinking of buying a tikka t3 lite for coyote huntin in 223 but what is the longest range it would work out to ? have used sierra match kings in 243 for years and thay work great. may go with hornady b-tip or sierra b-tip, what ever the gun likes

well iv always wanted a 223 , thay are fun and cheep to load something new . plus it would be a good action to build off later & dont beat u up . but i have heard thay are hard to custom load for cause of the short mag. so its 223 or 22-250. whant something lite & low profile compact maby with a 3x10x40 , anyone have a set up like that i can see? its going to need a versatile camo job to

As stated above all those are important. The thing about .223 is its pretty light round and can be effected by wind a fair bit. I have gotten handloads in 69gr out of a 1-9 barrel out to 600 yards with pretty dang good accuracy but when it gets windy its a crap shoot but thats at my skill level. I have heard of people getting them out to 800 yards with pretty good accuracy but there are still allot of factors involved. For my skill set anything past about 400 to 500 yards I stick to 308.
There is something to be said for a nicely setup bolt action .223. Its nothing to sneeze at considering the rise in ammo prices.
As a side note this is mostly my opinion based on my skill set and in no way is expert advise.

Taking a 223 to 1000 is not that difficult with the right bullets. I’ve been using a Remington tactical with 75 berger vld’s , seen below.

If the lite has the same twist the tactical it will be an 8t that will shoot just about everything but the 90g and maybe a few of the 80's depending on your local altitude and conditions. But in order to run the better LR bullets you need a mag system and chamber to keep as much of the bullet out of the case as possible. Otherwise you will fight to get the velocity necessary to make them useful at distance.

I've been able to get repeatable hits at 650yd with a 9 twist 223 shooting Hornady 75gr Steel Match ammo.
That said, its one thing to hit steel or paper at that range and another entirely to take shots on game animals...even coyotes. While I wouldn't want to be hit at 650yd by a 223, I'm not certain it has enough oomph left cleanly put down a dog at that range.

I shoot the 53gr Vmax out of my 700 1-12twist. I've dinged the 700yd plates but not with great accuracy. I am confident that if a coyote steps out at 500, I'd kill it 9 out of 10 times.

anything past 300 yards i will take my 243 , but in my part of the woods we only get about 200 - 250 yard shot coyots around here are not very healthy , i seen a guy pop one at 100 yards with a 22 mag in the neck and it was drt. not sure i would try it but it worked. any thoughts on the 22-250

I shoot my 5.56 AR15(1-7 twist) with PMC X-Tac 55 grain ammo out to targets in the 485-546 yard range with good results - hitting good groups on a 14" x 10" target. The next targets are 600 yards and it's difficult! I consider myself a good shooter, but no where near an expert. I'm only using a 1.5-4x scope also, would be better with a higher powered scope.
I have also noticed a fairly decent different on impact out at those distances when using different ammo.(55gr vs 62gr) Enough for me (at my skill level) to stay consistent with the same ammo.

That Tikka will make a real nice yote gun out to 500. But you mentioned building it up later. If you plan to do anything to it later, get a Remmy which will give you more options. But a pure .223, the Tikka is sweet.

Boiler Up pretty much nailed it. Even a coyote deserves a clean death. Remember, with a 224 your going to need a bullet that expands at your max distance.

shots will only be 300 max. so what mods can you do to a tikka ? would live to have the tikka varmint but its 1,300 bucks i dont have now .or build my 308, dont have the money for the mcmillan stock,i want a m40a1 stock but i would go for a B&C if thay made one like it.may have to go with what i can afford for now.anyone build off a b&c stock?

I just picked up a Tikka Varmint with Nikon Buckmasters scope and extra mag. for $700. It shoots very well out to 500 with the Hornady 68 HP.
I also have a Tikka T3 lite in 223. It will shoot with the Varmint but the bbl heats up faster.

William Roscoe put one together for me. I use it mainly deer hunting but it's a blast at distance and the perfect gun for my young son learning the long range game. 20" barrel with 1:8 twist shooting 75 a max's. No recoil, good ballistics for us to 800yds and cheap to shoot.

I will say that though the round has limits in energy it has taken several coyotes in the same field from 4-450yds, clean and efficient. Inside 200yds with a shoulder shot it anchors deer very well.

I built a 20" 7.7 twist .223, (actually two of them) and they are both hammers. Ive shot as far as 1260 in good conditions and they are a blast! and cheap.

And the 90's suck: In a .223 you can't push them fast enough to take advantage of the higher BC.

The Tikka does have a straight 1:8 twist.... My Tikka performs best with heavier bullets 75-77gr. I haven't tried anything heavier because I don't handload. To answer the ops question you will need an AI .223 Rem magazine to feed your Tikka the heavier grain bullets. I have my Tikka in a KRG whiskey chassis with an AI .223 Rem magazine. Hope that helps.

He's really big for his age Graham. It just looks like he's right beside me. Really he is a runt and has to choke up on the stock......another reason to love the .223 because he can shoot it and keep his noggin from meeting the scope.
