Looking to shoot 75 -95 grainers. Heres my specs... anything else I should be thinking about for the barrelled action ? Freebore?

Scope is a Leup MK6. Chassis is an XLR.

If you're hand loading you will find out very quickly you want a long freebore reamer otherwise you'll have those 88-95gr bullets jammed down in the case which will hurt velocity.

My custom long freebore reamer I had made is killin it.

Yes, def handloading. Your ealier post is what got me thinking....talked with my builder (SPR / Bugholes) and he said he's using a standard SAAMI freebore reamer ... that he wasn't aware of anyone using anything else. That it would be suitable for 75 - 90 grainers.

I'm out of my depth here and not sure what to do....

Just because Greg doesnt have one doesnt mean they dont exist. I have one which Keystone Accuracy has.. Sammi freebore is something like 0.065-.070 I think, I'm about double that.... here is sammi 88 ELD vs long freebore 88 ELD round. You can see how much that 88 is jammed down in the case eating up case capacity on the round for a sammi chamber.

Yeah... U right. I will talk with Greg. My mag will hold up to a 2.5" COAL. I'd rather not have my chamber limit me to 2.26"

And heres the mags you want go run. I've been testing these MDT dedicated 224V polymer mags and they are AWESOME. Best 224V bolt gun magazine option on the market. Feed everything from the short factory rounds to super long 88 ELD ELD handloads! I'f they arent on their website yet they should be any day. @MDT_OFFICIAL

There is a company that purchases polymer magazines and modifies them to work with 224 Valkyrie.

Padom,
So how are these different from Buck Holly's C&H Precision modded 223 poly mags.. ? I have had 2 of his for some time and they are smooth but I am now seeing some issues with wear.. as recently I have one now that spews out rounds after a full load if it gets bumped or even in the insertion into the magwell. Is this the same design or a decendent?? I will have to give Buck a call and see if he will do me right. I have been testing the AI with the Primal Rights 6 Dasher kit[with a mod the lips in] as well for the metal AIi mag and it's solid but a little less smooth as the poly.. but once you get one or two in it runs smooth. I also got the new MDT 6br metal mag and curious to what you did to mod it to make it work for the Valk? Adjust the lips or anything to prevent nose diving as that seems to be the issue with it in stock out of the box.. but ti was for the 6br. Any insights will be appreciated.

So what is the performance difference from SAAMI 224V factory ammo, to SAAMI hand-loads to the long FB chambered handloads? What is the quantifiable difference in MV and what does that mean for wind reads in reality. I know it will improve as you go across those options, but what are we really talking about. I'm not a reloader. I'm interested in the 224V, but if I'm going to handload, I might look at other options- but if I run a gas gun in factory 224V and hand load the spent brass for a bolt gun- either in a SAAMI or long chamber, that might be interesting.

Well the only advantage is taking on more powder to give you more velocity, I know some, a few have made long freebores.. maybe .1" longer.. in the throat so more room and less crunch. Is it worth it??.. that's up to you and what you might really get out of it with your full rig setup.. some of us have experience with early barrels with longer freebore b4 they got their chambers to the real SAAMI and they can work but if you're going to want to run factory ammo its not idea.l Depending on your barrel length powder, the primer used the longer freebore might get you to a higher node for handloads.

Just a curious sideliner here. How does the long freebore chamber shoot factory ammo? I think the big draw for me to the 224v is factory match ammo. Yes I handload, and if I got into this I’d be using both handloads and box ammo so I’m just curious.

But what is the quantifiable difference. I would think by now there should be enough people to be able to show groups and MVs for factory ammo and their reloads in the same gun, and enough to say that the longer chamber is worth so many FPS and how much more wind it can take. Better is better, but what are we really talking here.

I find the 224v round and the story behind it fascinating.

Yup. Thats why Im dying here waiting for the one I ordered.... to see if a 224 mild recoiling round can actually have the performance some claim...

There is no difference, they are the same thing. Thats who MDT uses to mill out the 223 mags.

You can find all the info in my 224 Valkyrie Bolt Gun review thread HERE but factory Hornady 88 ELD and Federal 75 TMJ shot pretty poorly in my .110 freebore chamber. But, factory ammo offerings in Saami chambers dont come close to the accuracy and speed Im getting in my .110 freebore chamber so you have to decide what you want. Extreme accuracy and every last drop of speed out of 224V in your bolt gun or be able to shoot factory ammo. Thats up to you. If youre shooting factory ammo 100% go with saami chamber. If your handload, why not get the most accuracy and speed out of your barrel so go with a long freebore reamer...

To answer your question, the difference in 88 ELD-M alone is 100fps+ but a huge drop in SD (17 vs 3) and consistent accuracy around 0.25moa... That is with a very mild handload. With some powders like H4895 2800fps is the wall before pressure starts because you are at max case fill but with CFE223 which is a ball powder you can get up to 2900 without pressure putting you at 200fps roughly faster than factory hornady 88 ELD ammo.

Everyone wants speed, for me I could care less what the speed is if the accuracy is there. Ill take 0.25moa accuracy and sub 5 SD's over speed all day every day. I dont chase speed, I chase accuracy and low SD's which mean consistency.
