Re: 22LR Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra?
back to the wolf extra / match target, i got the same information as many:
ammo lots are tested at the factory (Lapua), the most consistant lots go into the extra, the "lesser" consistant ones go into the match target. SK made at the same plant, many say they are the same SK rifle match = wolf match extra, SK standard plus = Wolf match target.
i actually think they grade them four ways as the ammo shot side by side through a savage mkii had different results in FPS, group size, fliers, drop, and the occasional FTF.
my "working theory" is:
the best stuff goes into wolf extra, the 2nd best stuff goes into SK standard plus, the 3rd best stuff goes into Wolf match target, the forth goes into SK rifle match. it's just my theory, but all four have proved in my setup to have different FPS, group sizes, and different POI (slightly). looking at it economically, i don't see why a manufacturer would pay to have 4 different types of packaging, advertising, etc. unless there actually were 4 different grades of their ammo.
out of a 5 or even a 10 shot group, i'd get a more consistant group with the wolf extra and sk standard plus. the cheaper wolf target and sk rifle match would (for whatever reason) have a smaller "primary" group for me, but a flier or two would open that "primary" group up slightly. additionally, shot through a chronograph, those 1 or 2 fliers where noticable - changing the average FPS and deviation. in reference to the OP, on the calculator it would appear that there is a difference in the FPS between them, at least in part to that deviation. through my setup there was also a difference in drop from 50 to 100 (at the time had my rifle zeroed at 25yards), the wolf extra dropped 10.75", the wolf target 11.5".
at the end of the day, i think all 4 of those ammos provide really good results through a large cross section of rifles, and some actually get better results with the cheaper wolf target and sk rifle match. IMO any of the 4 is a really good benchmark to test other ammos against as they all perform well enough to gain a benchmark status, especially for the price.
