About to start a new precision AR build in 6.5 Grendel (I want this to be a 600yd+ gun). Local shop has both a Keiger and Satern Grendel barrel in stock. Both include headspaced bolts. I can't make a decision, and here's where I'm stuck:

Kreiger:
+1 Lighter (Custom profile: .875" dia. behind gas block, .750" gas block to muzzle)

+1 $150 cheaper than the Satern

Satern:
+1 Could be more accurate (Heavy profile, fluted, .936 at the gas block)

+1 "Unique" factor (Satern doesn't make the Grendel barrels anymore)

My main question is how much improvement will be had from the heavy profile of the Satern over the Krieger at 600-1000yrds?

Two things to note:

1. The twist rates are 1:8 (Krieger) and 1:8.75 (Satern); and
2. The weight difference is about .75lbs--primary use of the gun will be from the bench; however, I'd like to use it to hunt on occasion (not sure the weight is significant enough to matter).

Re: 24" Grendel Barrel (Satern vs. Kreiger)

Is the satern button or rifled?

I have shot a 18inch button rifle Grendel and it would do 2 inch groups at 300yds all day long.
I just built a grendel with a 16inch barrel I plan on using out to 800yds suppressed.

I am pretty sure both would be great so go with the least expensive one..

Why is the barrel going to be so long?

Re: 24" Grendel Barrel (Satern vs. Kreiger)

Satern is cut rifled.

Buddy has a 23", +2" gas system 6.5 Grendel barrel from Satern that is very accurate.
Very little velocity difference between his 23" barrel and my 21" AA barrel (LW barrel, started life as 28" barrel).

20" with Grendel is knee of the curve IMHO, I see no strong reason to go much shorter or longer.

Re: 24" Grendel Barrel (Satern vs. Kreiger)

Longer barrels dont mean more accurite, it means depending on the cartarge your shooting you'll get some or quite a bit more velocity, not accuracy.
Grendels do like longer barrels but your length shoud be determined by what you want to do with it, and like you said you can always cut a longer barrel, you can't add to a shorter one.
Saturn made barrels under the Grendel name, which means they paid Bill, so they should have his chamber not the .264 LBC. Kreiger I have no idea which chamber they use.
For the weight, money, twist, and possably the better chamber I'd go with the Kreiger but that's me.

Re: 24" Grendel Barrel (Satern vs. Kreiger)

Rawdeal, I would go with the Kreiget in the 1-8 twist,to shoot the heavier bullets and the longer the barrel the better imho. Steve Satern made some great barrels for AA before the parting, I believe he is now making 264LBC barrels.

Re: 24" Grendel Barrel (Satern vs. Kreiger)

I'd probably go with the krieger. You probably would never notice a difference accuracy wise, it uses the .750 gassblock which has more options and its cheaper. A krieger is a great barrel.

Re: 24" Grendel Barrel (Satern vs. Kreiger)

I am now using my 3rd and 4th Grendels. If I were building my "ultimate" Grendel, I would use a 20 inch fluted, lightweight barrel. Accuracy will be fine, and the lighter weight will make the rifle decent for hunting, or fast tracking on multiple target engagements.

The really heavy or long barrels are just too hard to move fast. Take a look at the 6.5Grendel.com web site. I think that anything over 20 inch will be simply a bench or varmint rifle.

Re: 24" Grendel Barrel (Satern vs. Kreiger)

have tried barrels in 6.5 Grendel from 14.5 to 28"---IF there could only be 1 I'd choose 22" but variety is the spice of life!

Mark at SAC ususllly has Kriegers in stock and Saterns are avail
---either will contour it the way u want within reason

physical limitations of the shooter may necessitate a shorter barrel but when hunting I shoot so much better off-hand with the longer barrel and have no problem carrying it---after all it's an AR15, not a 10

Mark does great work, and he gives realistic lead times on when work can be completed.
