I was loading Winchester brass with 38 grains of H4350. That load is 4 or 5 grains lower than most loads I see around here. I'm just starting to load for this so I just went lower than most. Have seen more than a few loads listed as very accurate and not barrel burning velocity at or around 38 so I went with 38. When powdering the cases< the powder might make it up to the where the shoulder meets the case. The only other reloading I have done is for my 308 with Varget which seemed to fill the case alot more. Just want to see if that jives with everyone else. Scale has been recalibrated and tested with another so measuring is right on.

Any loads that won't smoke my barrel really fast would be helpful too

Re: 243 loading

I load 308,6.5 and 243 with Varget.I use 38 grns of varget,Fed210 LRP and a 70 grn Berger Target projo in my 243.This load shoots great groups, burns clean and varmints don't stand a chance if I get them in my sights.I haven't chrono'd the load, but it's printing 1 moa groups out to 400 yds consistant.
The 243 is an inherent barrel burning cartridge.Stuff a whole lot of powder in a case necked down to 6mm and somthing has to give.I shoot savage rifle's,so my shilen S/S match barrels only cost $250 a pop and I change them myself.I really don't fret about getting a little over 3,000 rounds out of them before the barrel needs changeing. Some of the slower burning powders shoot good, but as you've found out, they're dirty. Some are also very temp sensative and some are very pricey, hard to find and temp sensative.I was given a varget starting load from a local .243 guru and I've never had to try anything else. Good Luck.

Re: 243 loading

I did a ladder test with my savage 243 using 87 vmax's. MY rifle likes 42.5-43 grains of H4350. ymmv I dont really worry about burning out my barrel. 243 to me means 2000-3000 rounds and its time for a new barrel anyway sorry. So far i have 6 loadings on my FL sized remington brass
but i only bump the shoulder back about 3-4 thou each time.

hope this helps

Re: 243 loading

Bullshit on the barrel burning....that comes from speed freaks shooting hot loads and getting their tubes WAY too hot from way too much shooting without letting it cool.

Run moderate speeds and don't overheat the barrel...duh.

I like H414 in our .243's running 85/87 grain bullets.......

Re: 243 loading

I use H414 in my 243. I just load a like 5 rounds with different powder measurements to check accuracy, I go with the most accurate load. Sometimes the most accurate load is pushing the higher end of pressures... I try to stay away from this but for a hunting rifle that 2000 to 3000 rounds is going to be several years... I will load hot. Just me...
