243 need rebarreled?

i have a real nice m70 243 i baught 6 months ago. i baught it used and looked up the numbers and it was made in 1965. i couldnt believe it when i read that. it looks like a brand new gun. it is bedded, blueprinted, floated and has a trigger. i have put about 500 rounds down it and one day it will keep 1/2 moa or under and the next day not so good. is it getting to be that time? if so what can i have in rebarreled to?

Clean everything as well as you can possible clean it then give it another go. I don't imagine you have a round count for the rifle and depending on its prior use the tube could be toast.

If you want to re-barrel you can chose for a large number of calibers like .260, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x47mm Lapua, 7mm-08 and 6mmXC. You can use any caliber designed for a standard bolt face short action.

how does it work? does a smith take my barrel and redo it or would i have to get a new one? what would it cost me? sorry for being stupid to all this.

you would get a new barrel from (pick the company) for 300-400 bucks then have the smith thread it, chamber it, cut it for length, crown it.

you should be able to get it done for 500 bucks or close to that

If you want to re-barrel you can take your rifle to a smith and they should do everything for you. Now you have to choose what caliber, whose barrel you want (Rock, Shilen, Benchmark, etc.) and what contour and twist rate. Price depends on all of these choices. You could get a standard barrel with nothing speical about it and it will run you acouple hunrdred plus gunsmith fees. If you want it flutred, or carbon wrapped, or nitrided, etc., it will cost more and more and more.

i bought this gun for woodchucks to whitetail. id like to keep as a 243. i have too much money wrapped up in casings and bullets. if i get a 7 or 8 twist what is the lightest bullet i can run through it?
