243 short barrel powder choice ?

I am building my 8 year old 1 st rifle. It will be a 243 with 18" or less barrel.
It is a 1in 8 twist. I am looking to load the heavier bullets. I would appreciate your help with powder suggestions to get the best load.
This will primarily be a hunting rifle for 500 yards or less.

Bolt or gas? I'm assuming bolt. The only thing to really do is stick to the normal powders but expect less downrange performance.
