did some searching and came up w/ some info, but not w/ the components i'm using.
a little info first-
i have a 26" savage 1 in 9.125 twist barrel. i've been using 41 grns of h4831 pushing 105 A Max's around 2900 and am having good luck out to 600yds(furthest i can go now).
after handling a precision carbine that is the route i want to go, but stay 243.
i'm goin w/ 20" or 22" barrel in a 1 in 8 twist.

my question is to stay w/ the 105 A MAX (have over 500 on hand), or possibly go to some 107 smk's, in the short barrel what powder will have the best burn rate for that combination w/o having to buy 5 different types of powder? seems all the info i find is for lighter hunting bullets. i know some of the 87 grn and other bullets in that area are good out to 600 and so. but i want to stick w/ the higher BC bullets for when i can go to 1k and distances around there.

since i'm going w/ the faster twist i don't have to have the velocity it took to stabilize the bullet in the 1 in 9.125 barrel. so velocity isn't super critical, just want to keep the cartridge efficient w/o a lot of overburn.

powders from slowest to fastest that are easily available to me.
h4831
h4350
h380
varget
h4895 (can get faster than this but wasn't sure if that would be getting too fast)

any info would be appreciated. sorry if it got a little long winded. thanks

Re: 243 short barrel powder?

I would stick with your H4831. You might also try H4350, just to see what you get. I love me some H4350.

QuickLoad shows H4350 will give you about 45 fps more than H4831 in a 22" barrel with a 105 A-max.

Re: 243 short barrel powder?

I've used H4831 and H4350 in my 243s, including a 22 incher. The H4350 loads were faster in all the rifles using 107 SMKs.

Re: 243 short barrel powder?

ok. i also have almost a full pound of h380 so i will try that and the h4350 aswell since i have used up the last of my h4381. like i said not too concerned w/ a real blistering round. wanna have decent barrel life. thanks for the info.

Re: 243 short barrel powder?

you might want to try some IMR7828 i use this in my ruger compact with a 18 1/2 in . barrel and still get 3250 fps with 100 gr bullets its slower than IMR 4350 but shoots better for me
