getting into the .243, it seems the ol' cartridge that has been "forgotten about for the longest time" or considered the "kids deerhunting cartridge" is now one of the hottest things going.

have a remington 700 26" 1:9 1/8 twist varmint

would like to use 105 amax from 200M out to 500M, occasionally going further, mostly on paper and steel.

there's alot on the hide about .243 loads, mostly screamers. with the reputation of burning barrels, i'd like to keep my loads "sub screaming"...i'm not afraid to dial or shoot in the wind, don't need a pill traveling the speed of light to make up for what a mechanical adjustment on the optic can take care of. i'm also weary of compressed loads.

most of those amax 105 threads go off topic in the first few posts and change to a 87 vmax topic too, tends to make it hard to decipher valuable info on 105's only.

so anyone running 105 amax between 2400 and 2700 / 2800 ish?

do i need a screamer load with the 105's, or is running them in that 2400 - 2700ish range working? (sometimes faster isn't better, i'm more impressed by tight consistant groups downrange than high #'s on the chrony at the muzzle)

what's your fav. powder recipe to achieve good results with the above?

i've heard everything from IMR4064 (which i'd love to be able to swing) to IMR 4350, to win 760 to RL17.

for starters, just using rem, win, or whatever i can find brass, fed 210 primers, and a COL of 2.63, cases trimmed to 2.035

ideally, i'd like to have a powder that i can run the lighter heads for critters, but the reality is it'll probably just be a dedicated stell paper puncher with 105s

any advice on an accurate non screaming (if possible) JUST 105 amax loads is appreciated.

Re: .243 SUB screaming 105 amax loads

so why not just run a 6br
If you dont plan on utilizing the extra case cap of 243, 6br will do what ya need and yields improved barrel life

Re: .243 SUB screaming 105 amax loads

I started with the stock varmint 1:9 1/8 twist and I have been shooting the 105s for a couple of years. You may have trouble stabilizing the 105s if you run them slow in a 1:9 1/8. Reloder powder seems to work well. The slower powders loaded on the upper end work well with the 26" barrel.

Re: .243 SUB screaming 105 amax loads

If you don't intend on running the 105's hard, the 95gr SMK would be a better match with that twist and it would give up nothing in the range that you will be shooting.

Re: .243 SUB screaming 105 amax loads

H4350 works well. Hodgdon lists:
105 GR. HDY A-MAX Hodgdon H4350 .243" 2.760"

Min- 35.0 2663 44,300 CUP
Max- 37.5 2799 49,500 CUP

I was loading the 105 BTHP and up to 42grns with no pressure but it was also a custom barrel. The Hodgdon data gives you velocity you were looking for but as mentioned you will have to shoot them to make sure they stabilize that slow.

Re: .243 SUB screaming 105 amax loads

I have some loaded up ready to test once deer season is over using H4350 or H4831sc (forget which right now...). I will let you know what I find. FWIW, they stabilized fine when I was in that area with H1000. The A-max and Berger 105's worked so well I never tried anything lighter.

Re: .243 SUB screaming 105 amax loads

im gonna give h1000 a try with the 105's

hopefully my dies will be here early next week.

and try to stay away from winchester brass. i bought a bag tonight, and 18 of the 50 had fucked up flash holes. looks like im gonna pony up for lapua

He can't because he gobbled all these up on black friday and is trying to pimp them out... Don't think he's figured out how many rules, let alone laws, he's breaking yet

Re: .243 SUB screaming 105 amax loads

My dad bought the ADL varmint in .243 and had a hell of a time getting one. Luckily one feller didn't pass his background check so he was able to pick it up. Kinda shitty someone would buy as many as possible @ $200 off, then try and sell them at regular price. A friend of mine wanted one in .308 and waited 9 hours and couldnt get one. Funny the day after Thanksgiving, a day we all give thanks for what we have, some jerkoff goes out a buys as much as he can in order to profit from it.

Wow, lol. BTW listen to niles coyote. 45.9gH1000 .10 (for my gun) off lands, shoots in .2's. BTW better not get much attention from buying all that, Lotta rules/laws broke in that deal. BEWARE THE BLACK SUBURBAN when they come knockin
