Looking for info as to if the 9.25 twist rate used on the Rem. SPS-V 20" .243 will stabilize the 105 gr Amax. I am thinking of purchasing one to shhot and eventually rebarrel. I already have another stock and would eventually have another barrel installed and punched to .243 AI. I have a older (70's vinatge) heavy barrel Winchester in .243 but I plan to sell it and build off a Rem. 700 platform as all my other rifles are Remington 700s. Any info is appreciated.

Re: .243 Win twist question

All reports are that the 105 AMAX will work fine in the 9.25 twist.

When you do rebarrel though figure out what bullet you plan to use and get the right twist to handle it. A true 8 twist would handle the 105s up to the 115s. I have a 7.5 twist on mine and it works very well with all those wegihts too.

Re: .243 Win twist question

Thanks Rob. I had planned to go to 1:8 on the rebarrel as I only want to shoot the 105s and the 115 DTAC. I want to keep it at 20-22" as I will have it threaded for my suppressor and will use it a a deer hunting rifle.

Re: .243 Win twist question

You might want to consider a 1:7.5 twist. Some manufacturers don't have a true 1:8twist. It's better to be safe then sorry. Bruno's shooting supply usually has kreigers on stock.

Re: .243 Win twist question

I dont believe you NEED as fast a twist as people say.

People talk a lot about fast twists. Theyre the "thing" right now in the tacticool world it seems.

One of my instructors in school is a barrel maker. He makes cut rifled barrels.
He's done tests to see what twists are really needed to stabalize heavy bullets. Many times, he found, you dont need what the manufacurer says you need.

and over spinning a bullet can hurt you too. Hurts velocity, for one.

Re: .243 Win twist question

I shoot a 7.5 twist barrel with 115s and 105s and they shoot great. Velocities are just fine also. Getting around 3020fps from the 115s very easily.

With a .243 and shooting the heavies I wouldn't go slower than a true 8 twist.
