I picked up a Remington 700 in .243 this past weekend and need some load information. I was wondering if anyone used Varget for this round? Never owned a .243 and I was thinking of loading it with Varget and 95gr. NBT. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

My buddy has a 26" 700 with a 1:9 1/8 twist??? I loaded up some rounds with 87gr Vmax over 35.8 gns of RL-15. It shoots 1/4" five shot groups at 100 yards and we were break'in clay birds at 600 yards with this load until it became boring.

Take care,Stan

Re: .243 Winchester loads

I may have to look into the RL15. I was just wondering if anyone used Varget because I already use it to reload .223 and .308 and wanted to use it for .243 also. I will probably use this rifle for deer hunting at distances under 200 yds. Hard to get a shot much farther here in the mountains of east TN.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

I found vit n160 46.6g, Lapua 90g molly scenars or berger 95g vld mollys with Lapua brass and br2 gave exellent acuracy with my 1-10 twist 243.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

Only Varget load I'm shooting in mine is 39 gr with the SGK HPBT's. Using 210M primers and Nosler brass .010 off the lands and 1/4" and better 5 shot groups at 100.

I have better groups with IMR-4831 44.3 gr with the 210M in Lapua brass with only about 20FPS slower speeds.

95gr Berger VLD hunting bullets with 42 gr of IMR-4831 in Lapua and 210M's .010 off the lands fired single shot are yielding right at 3000fps and one ragged hole most of the time only reason they don't is my choking.

Haven't had the rifle long and still working with different powers but have had the same good luck with RL17, also. Trying H100V and reloader 19 with 95 gr Silvertips now. Haven't found many combos that don't work yet somewhere down the line. Varget load for the 85 is above max in some places but not in the Lyman which is what I go by more than most. Think several will give 38 for a max load.

My rifle is a 1/10 5R twist with 24" barrel hunting rifle. I haven't got around to playing with the lengths because I try to load for all my rifles .010 of the lands and have only gained accuracy with 2 of my loads by changing that distance.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

I have a model 110 savage rifle my father used to hunt deer for years. After I received it for my oldest daughters first hunting rifle, I began playing with loads for 100 gr Speer BTSP. I tried IMR 4350, but did not get the groups I wanted so I went to IMR 3031 which I also use for my 22-250. I found 33.5 gr of the IMR 3031 with the 100 gr Speer BTSP produced my best groups.

Can't find the files right now but 43gr of IMR-4350 behind the 75gr Hornady HP was Sub-MOA.

All the loads Improve with Lapua brass.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

Going to try that 35.8 with RL-15. Have had buzzard luck loading for .243, Win. Mod. 70, 1:10 twist, except for 60 gr. speers. It did seems that the faster I pushed, the better it got, but I stopped 1/2 gr.(IMR 4064) below published max. Was using Barnes 90X pills with NOTHING to call a group.

Just loaded some more 90's with IMR 3031, in OCW increments. Have not had a chance to try them out.
GAC, what was the size of you best 3031 group?

Re: .243 Winchester loads

Right @ 1". I have free floated the barrel but have not bedded it yet, so I am hoping this will shrink it more. I am a real fan of the faster powder for my 243 and 22-250, and have been able to get the accuracy without having to push the max load, in hopes of keeping my barrel a little longer.

I have shot 80 and 90 grain bullets and have been able to get the same group sizes with the 3031.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

Just started loading the 243 in IMR-4350 and Varget. Rifle is a factory Remington 700 BDL. So far 4350 yeilded best group of 1 inch at 100 yards with 42.0 grains, but also flattened primers. Best group with Varget, just under 1 inch was 34.5 and no signs of pressure. Cases are Winchester, Winchester LR primers, and Nosler 95 grain.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

Rhutch, finally got in the ballpark with 37.5 grs. RL-15 from Win. Mod 70, 1:10 twist. I still cant see the 1:10 stabilizing anything heavier than the 87 grainers.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

I shoot the 105A-Max in a 1-10" Shilen 6mmAI,for conversation and yes...I savvy the affects of increased velocity in relation to enhancing stability.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

My 1/10 has shot every 95 grains I've feed it so far into nearly 1 hole groups. Try a box of Hornady 95 SST factory loads and if it will shoot them they will shoot. I've shot the SST, Berger VLD hunting, Silvertips and Nosler Ballistic tips. Got some of the Sierra match 95's to try next when I'm done with powder checks. RL-17, RL-19, IMR 4831 have all worked great. Trying out H100V now.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

37.5 to 38 grains of RL-15 is starting to give me what I expect from my .243. It was not my best day at the range, but I won't blame the load. Still maintaining that my Mod 70, just doesn't like 90+ grainers.

Brass issues on the 5th loading too. Primers were blowing out, so I guess I got all I could get out of that brass. Low end loads using 3031. Happy I wasn't going up to max to try stabilizing those 90's. Time to break out the new brass, and fine-tune the RL-15 load.

Also what velocity are you getting with RL22? Happen to know your recipe? I max out the powder curve and still not getting up to mid 2800's yet.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

243 win RL 22, 45 grains,105 grain speer bullet seated .010 off lands, 1 and 10" twist, 18 1/2 barrel(factory) average 2725 but do get alot of muzzle flash so I know all powder is not burned. This has bee the onlt load under a 1" with this gun. Most about 1.5" This load is safe in my rifle so check loads and work up and you may want to start a little farther back on lands. FUZZ (Been a awesome deer load)

Re: .243 Winchester loads

I use 42.5 gr of RL-22 with the Nosler 95gr BT in my daughters Model Seven. .010 off the lands, good load for velocity/consistency and burns well in the 20" barrel. I could not get Varget to shoot well at all in this rifle.

Re: .243 Winchester loads

Well after some testing I found a load with Varget that my rifle likes. 37.5gr of Varget and a 95gr NBT seated .015 off the lands. No signs of pressure even though this is loading a little hotter than the reloading manual says. I can get consistent 1" groups with .75" being my best. I figure that will do for a Model 700 with a sporter barrel. I did bed the stock and work on the trigger some. This should do just fine for deer hunting here in north east TN.
