I am getting ready to rebarrel my remington 700 to a 260, but I do not know what reamer I want to use. One gunsmith has a reamer with a .292 neck and .113 throat the other has a reamer and a seperate reamer to do the throat wherever i want it and he can do a .293 neck. I do not know for sure what bullet i want to shoot but i am leaning toward a SMK or Lapua 123 grain.I would like to keep the overall length at 2.830 for my magazine. I might also want to shoot something in the 140 range probably an Amax. Can anyone give me their reamer specs and overall length. If I have it made for the 123's will the 140's seat too deep into the case for powder capacity. THe barrel will be a Krieger #17 1-8.5 finished at 27".Also I wiil not be shooting Bergers.

Re: 260 remington reamer

I just got done loading for my newly built 260 from Lamphear, my loaded 139s are less than 2.740, all my test rounds are loaded at the lands, 292 or 293 neck is a good thing also, who are the smiths your looking at?

Suicide, .113" FB wouldnt be the end of the world but it may be a touch too long for the 123's. I run a .100" FB in mine for the 130, 139, 140 & 142's. I also have a .060" FB reamer that has chambered several drills

I think Terry Cross runs a .090" FB in his reamers, both the .100" and .090" are exceptional. My 139's are jumping and loaded to 2.835" in an AI magazine.....they shoot in dots. My 130 Bergers are loaded at 2.935", +.015" in the lands and shoot in dots as well.

I just ordered another 260 Reamer the other day.......100" FB was the flavor, hope this helps.

I had Trammel build me a rifle back around 2000, was a total hack job. My personal experience, yours may varie. Garland builds a hell of a stick though. I have a few running around here that he built. 6.5x284, 280AI, 7mm RM, 6x284, 300WM. I have also had the pleasure to shoot a bunch of my friends sticks that he has built and his work is second to none. The Smith's here on the Hide will build you a helluva rifle, but I the backlog's are there. Garland can get you in and out in 2 weeks. Sooner if you ask real nice

You might also consider Shumaker. He is more of a general smith but I have a 260 Rem he built and it shoots really well. Cheaper than Garland backlog's sometimes.

Re: 260 remington reamer

Thanks for all of the advice I still have a while to mull it over. I think Ill just dummy up a round with a 123 in it and let Garland build it to fit that. Unless someone can talk me into shooting the 140's.

Re: 260 remington reamer

IMHO the heavier bullets don't require as much powder, don't have to be pushed hard to make them perform, thus barrel life should be longer, I'm going for 2800fps with 139s, at that speed they will flat out kick a 308 ass
