I have a Sierra and Speer manual and neither have info on this combination... AND the Hodgdon website has zero info as well...

Can anyone give me a good hunting load so that I can help a buddy out?

Thanks!

Re: 270 Winchester + 150 Gr. Sierra GameKing + Varget

I wish I could ... I use varget for my .308 and H4350 for my .270 (standard load I use for deer is 54.5gr H4350 with 130gr hornady SPs). I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see if anyone has anything good ...

Re: 270 Winchester + 150 Gr. Sierra GameKing + Varget

I've checked all of my manuals and none have data for Varget and 150 gr. bullets. Varget is a medium burning powder. You're going to get high pressures with low velocity. 150 gr. bullets in a 270 Winchester needs slow burning powders.

The on line Hodgdon manual shows Varget in 130 and 140 gr. bullets.

The 140 gr. bullet data goes from 41.0 to a max of 43.7gr. with a max velocity of 2772 FPS. I would guess you would reach a maximum of about 42 grs. or so of Varget with a 150 gr,. bullet. You would have to start at about 40 grs. and work up to max. You just won't get efficient velocities. Powders in the 4350/4831 burning rate are much more efficient than Varget.

I've loaded for the 270 Winchester since the 1970's. I have used medium burning powders for 130 gr. bullets, but for normally use the slow powders for bullets 130 grs. and up.

I do see IMR 4064 and IMR 4895 being used for some of the heavier bullets in the Hodgdon on line data. IMR 4064 is close to Varget in burn speed.
As long as you start low (not more than 40 grs.) you could get Varget to work.

Reloader 22 is recommended in the sierra manual. Slower powders are the best for the 270. I have used reloader 22 and h4831sc with great results. 53.7 is the accuracy load in sierra's manual

Varget works great for me with 130 gr SGK.

150g (I use Hornady SST)
50.3g IMR 4350
CCI200
COL 3.215 (SHORT)

Shoots very accurately in my Weatherby
Chrono'd around 2730 fps last time I checked (50*F)

Re: 270 Winchester + 150 Gr. Sierra GameKing + Varget

I'm advising my buddy to buy some H4350 because there is reloading data out there for this combination, and it seems that Varget isn't the correct powder for a 270W.

Can someone explain this to me? I've only read that Varget it "too fast" for a 270W... ??

TAC308- FLIGHT 762 said it perfectly... 4 posts above you. Not trying to be a dick- but it was right there.
