Having a barrel built and was wondering what is the best twist rate for 150-175 grain bullets. Popular rates are 1:9 and 1:10 although I want to know who has had good results and with what bullets and volocities?

Thanks,
Ed

1:9 minimum
1:8.5 is better
I wouldn't shy away from a 1:8

I agree with this, I have not tried the 1:8, but no problems with the others.

Just picked mine up from the smith last week. 1:9 kreiger , spent a long time with load development . Ended up shooting the 180 gr. hybrid Bergers the best. 57.5 gr. rl22. Shot several groups in the .1s and .2s

Re: 280 Ackley Improved optimal twist rates

Sounds like everyone likes the 1:9. Does anyone have experience with Hornaday 162gr Amax or 168gr Bergers. Berger recommends 1:10 for there bullets in this weight? Also does 4 or 5 groove make any difference besides increased volocities and can I go with a shorter barrel than a 26in?

I've had really good luck with 1:8 twist with the a-max and the 190's. no regrets so far.

I had a standard 280 Rem with a 1:9 trueflite barrel at 24". It stabilized the 168 vld fine, but I settled on the 162 amax at 2880fps.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved optimal twist rates

26" 1:9 Bartlein works for me on the 168gr VLD @ 2935fps & 162gr A-max@ 2950fps. I haven't tried the 180s- I don't see the need

I use the 189 cautericio's at about 2650-2700 fps. They shoot really good but its hard to beat the 162 amax at 3000 fps.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved optimal twist rates

The 162 A Max is what I plan on shooting primarily as the lightest weight bullet and it is nice to see that a 1:9 twist works well the heavier bullets. My plan for lighter weight bullets and smaller game is to build a 260 remington. Thanks,

Ed
