I am going to build a rifle and was interested in the 280 Ackley Improved. I have heard that it is very simular to the 7mm but with less powder and recoil which is what I would like. I mainly just wont to hunt with it but I do tend to shoot alot at the range. I have picked out a mcmillan stock but thats about it so far. Anybody have a 280 AI with some info on how they shoot with some particular load? Any other info on this caliber would be great to.

56 gr of rl17 will get you about 3050 from a 28 in stick with 162 amaxes. I have a1/8.7 twist cut Rock on mine. It is a laser. Pm me if you want to know some details.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved?

Case Capacities for popular 7mm cartridges:

7mm-08 54 grains
7x57mm 59 grains
284 Winchester 66 grains
280 Rem 69 grains
7mm SAUM 73 grains
280 Ackley Imp 73 grains
7mm WSM 81 grains
7mm Rem Mag 84 grains

First pick whether you want a long action or a short action.

Second, pick your performance level, based on case capacity.

Maximum performance down range, and case capacity are closely coupled. The more case capacity, usually means the better downrange performance.

More powder, means more power, but also an inverse amount of barrel life. If your planning on a large number of rounds down range, then think less capacity rather than more.

Just because a cartridge tickles your fancy, does not mean it's necessarily a good idea. If your plan is to shoot 500 rounds a year, then any of the above will be fine.

If your plan is to shoot 3500 rounds per year, then some choices get weeded out, unless you want to be your barrel makers new best friend......

That said, the 280 AI is a fine round, with excellent performance, and good barrel life for a 7mm. Just be sure you really need what it offers.

If you have a .473" boltface LA then .280AI

If you have a .532" boltface LA then 7mmSAUM

Both are excellent cartridges with essentially identical capacities, in a 1/9 or faster twist barrel for shooting LR (+1000yds).

Re: 280 Ackley Improved?

That was a nice summary by BobinNC. Amazing selection of options for 7mm.

I went through a similar exercise and narrowed it down to 284, 280AI, and 7mm SAUM. I could get enough of what I wanted with the 284 and the LA did not bother me and avoid recoil of the larger cartridges. Little less max velocity although some show able to get 3000 fps with the 162/168 in the 284 which is more than enough for the hunting i do and plenty good out to 1K for paper.

Search 284, 280, 7mm-08, and 7mm WSM for the several months and there are some good posts to go through.

Re: 280 Ackley Improved?

I am currently in the 280AI build process too.

I am going with a BDL action, Krieger 24" 1"9 twist barrel. H-S Precision stock.

Just ordered the Nosler brass and Redding dies yesterday.
