Not a lot of talk about this, but some.
It looks like a COAL of 3.4" with 162 and perhaps also 168 bullets leaves a lot of space behind it. .100 more than published OAL. Published load data shows no listed compressed loads at 3.3". Also, 3.4" leaves loads of room to chase lands.
Leaves me to wonder if more powder can be burned under the 3.4" cartridge.
Occasional loads shown by those posting their 280 loads show a higher velocity than the published loads.
My 7-08 will run faster, safely, with a higher than published charge wile using a 2.930 OAL.
Anyone with 280 experience please advise.

I would have to look at my notes but I think I am running a 160gr Partition in my 22" barrel at 2825-2830 with Reloader 17. Granted it is a lite weight hunting rifle and not a purpose built precision rifle. I'm sure with a 26" or longer barrel you could really get 162s or 168s moving. I have thought about building a 280 AI just for that reason....than rechambering my current 280 at the same time.

Basic initial notes;
3.384 oal, .012 off, 162 Amax in a loose [fat] Criterion chamber. 26" Barrel nut Remington.
56.2 H4831. Fed. 210M.
2785 - 2800 fps. 39 3/4 min to 1200.
This is the only load to even resemble a stable load. Well under and to 57.5 where I stopped. Very temperamental and picky. Rounds stack at 100 only if I pull the consistent seating by feel for best rounds.
I think I need another barrel [chamber].
eta; this is the same load 175 SMK 'went to' and those may not be as touchy, and not as fast down range. One load only also though.
