I am considering building a 284 win rifle after reading this little bit:
http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek095.html

I have an extra short action and a Seekens WSM mag system. I figure this would be a good setup to allow me to shoot the 162s and 175s at mag lengh and get better barrel life then 7wsm. Who has had a gun smith on the hide build them a 284 on a short action system? And how do they like them?

Re: 284 Guys: Why should I build one?

A short action isn't "ideal" for a 284. Do some 284 searching under my name, and you'll find out all there is to know around here on 284s on a SA.

I should have velocity data soon.

Works out fone for you...... If i have it throated for the 162s at 2.90... That gives me plenty of room with that WSM bottom metal. I guess it allows like 3.25 COAL?

Re: 284 Guys: Why should I build one?

If I were you I would NOT run a 284 win in a short action. You would be robbing it of its potential. Could you make it work??? Well yeah, but you can shoot lots of other short action designed calibers and get just a good or better ballistic.

Just my thoughts.

The 284 kind of falls behind in a short action to the rest of the competition.
The biggest reason is you have to stay within 2.950. And that means you are going to have a very hard time shooting the longer heavy bullets the the 7mm has to offer.

I have had two .284 WINs on long actions and they were AWESOME. But mainly because I could seat the bullets way out and utilize the bigger case capacity. When the long 175 SMK is stuck half way into the case it makes it hard to utilize the cases advantages.

Good luck!

in process of building a 284 on stiller tac 300. i have owned a 284 on short action. long action will be much better. my buddy has the rifle now and it is now a 308. he built a 284 on a long 700 and is getting over 3000fps with rl17 and 162 amax. just my opinion.

Everyone pray to the gods of proper chronograph light.

Hopefully tomorrow, I'll know how fast a 162amax goes when pushed by 52.5gr RE17 in a 284 cartridge loaded to 2.950".

Re: 284 Guys: Why should I build one?

Well, the praying worked! LOL

2948fps average of 5 shots, SD of 5fps. Oehler 35 - so pretty trustworthy I'd say.

No pressure signs - so I think it can go faster yet.

Bartlein did a nice job on the barreled action. Fit/finish is great. They followed my instructions, though they misunderstood what I wanted with the muzzlebrake. I wanted it to follow the barrel contour, but my instructions were "fit/time brake and blend to barrel contour". They did a very nice job blending the transition, but my brake is about .200" larger in diameter than the barrel. I should have been more clear, perhaps drawn a picture.

Otherwise, I specified a tight clearance between boltnose and breechface, tight clearance between extractor and its slot, and they sure did.

This rifle is tight!

Between that, and my "match" chamber, I hope the rifle fields well. Seems like I've put myself at higher risk of a bit of debris or something preventing chambering, but we'll see.
