So, being a 7mm geek, I was happy to see the .284 Lapua come out. I'm a little cornfoozed though as to why the chambers are almost the same as the Winchester .284 but slightly larger. IIRC, the purpose was so you could use 6.5x284 brass and neck it up, but wouldn't it be a smaller chamber for that? You would be thinning out the brass in the neck, not thickening it. The donut created would be pushed inward when sizing. I'm wondering what the idea behind the differences were.

Anybody know what exactly the differences are?

I'm not aware of a new "284 Lapua" cartridge. Lapua makes 6.5X284 brass, which can be necked up to 284. Since the 6.5X284 was a wildcat, when Norma standardized the cartridge dimensions changed slightly. If you want to use Lapua brass in a 284 make sure they use a Norma/Lapua reamer and not a standard 284 Winchester reamer. I know, I recently had one built.

I guess this is kind of a misnomer as the cartridge sounds like you describe. Maybe that's all it is, the reamer is the same dimensions as the 6.5x284 brass. No name change then.

I'll get back with a link to the reference of the cartridge.
