Has anyone chambered a rifle in this caliber? I found it on 6mmbr.com and am pretty interested. Its a wildcat of the AI school and I like it because its unique. It has great numbers but the 7mm can keep up with a 6.5mm. Any thoughts? I reload and like the idea of my own round but the data behind 243s and 260s gives them an advantage.

Re: 284 Shehane

I shoot a 284 Shehane for F-Class comps. I do like the Cartridge. I did spend the extra ching for custom dies. It does have about 4gr capacity over the standard 284 Win. If you like different then give it a try. If you want to save money then go straight 284 Win. Can't go wrong either way.

Re: 284 Shehane

Unless your going to chamber a fire form barrel to go with it, I'd pass. The standard 6.5x284 is hard to beat and with a 140 Berger, it's even harder to beat. One of the best accuracy nodes for the 140 Bergers is 2,950ish fps, an easy velocity to reach with the 6.5x284.

Re: 284 Shehane

Sincere question: What does a shehane do that a 7WSM, 7-300WSM, 7RSAUM can't?

I am building a 284 because it is a bit of a non-magnum step up from 7-08. I looked at Shehane, but its kind of an odd duck and I figured if I wanted/needed more than 284, I'd just choose one of the short 7 mags.

Re: 284 Shehane

If you want to do long range the 7mm short mags are the way to go. My 7m WSM pushes 180 Bergers at 2960 and 162g Hornady's at 3100+. My Savage 284 is extremely accurate with 162 A-Max's at 2950. They run circles around my 6.5's. I went with the regular 284 because of the expense of the Shehane dies. Out to 600 yds I usually shoot the 6.5's mainly cause their cheaper to shoot.

Re: 284 Shehane

My brother has one, and runs side-by-side with my 7WSM on velocity in the low 2,900s with less powder and better barrel life.

I agree you want a fire forming barrel to keep your real barrel intact. Why burn the throat on fire forming loads.

Re: 284 Shehane

I built a Shehane so I could get 284 long action performance out of a short action in my tactical rifle. It runs 162 Amax @ 2970 and can easily go over 3000. accuracy is great, fire forming is no big deal and it still shoots well when fire forming. I had a 7 saum and prefer my 284

Re: 284 Shehane

Oh man, am I excited for my upcoming 284! Barreled action in my hands in ~1 week...

Honestly, I'll be 100% satisfied to hit 2850 with the 162amax from my 26.5" Bartlein. Anything more would only be a bonus.
