My buddy is looking at buying a 30-378 and was told with some special powder, you can get 5,000rds of good accuracy.

I told him no FREAKING way!!!!

Is there any such combination that would get acceptable accuracy and 5,000rds in a 30-378???

sure there is, it would be some combination of powder/filler that would download it to the performance of .308 - or you can just go with the .308 for 8000 rds from a barrel

Define accuracy. If he's only looking to keep it within a given grid square, no problem. If he's talking about 1-2 MOA, then he probably also believes in fairies, unicorns and leprechauns.

A thousand rounds will probably be stretching this a great deal. I needed (required, without fail) guns that would hold 1/2 MOA for testing, and went through a couple of these. Lost it somewhere around 5-600 rounds. To say it's not a favorite of mine would be a huge understatement.

Cartridges in this class, you expect a trade off. There might be a few 222Remingtons out there that have maintained acceptable accuracy since the 50's, but there is no free lunch, shooting the big boomers. One I am familiar with is 6/284, (same thing, only different) and which could be considered "over bore" for some people. If you are not careful, you can lose accuracy while developing a load. In this particular example, less than 600 rounds. Other people, sensible loads and a slow twist, they might squeeze twice as many rounds, but then, why not just get a 243?

Without knowing anything about who said what and what their frame of reference might be; I would be very skeptical of claims of 5,000 accurate rounds from a 30-378 regardless of the propellant used. Put another way; Not in my world. BB
