300 SMKs and Seating Depth

Re: 300 SMKs and Seating Depth

Hi J. I had to go with "like to jump". Not for any reason other than I always just seat them to mag length, approx. 3.620"-3.625" and that leaves them jumping about 20-30thou in my rifles. I've never had any problem getting accuracy out of this depth, shooting Surgeon XL actions, and Krieger #10 MTU contour tubes.

I've never had a .338LM set up as a single shot rifle, so I can't say how they'd react jammed into the lands from personal experience. I can't however imagine my rifles gaining any accuracy by varying the seating depth. They can outshoot me any day of the week

Re: 300 SMKs and Seating Depth

I will be using them. I should have my rifle done in a couple weeks. Joe Starnes is buiding my 338 Lapua.

I had a hard time finding 300 smk's, but ended up with about 1,350 of them. I have never shot a 338 Lapua so I hope we get some good info with this thread.

I have Badger M5 bottom and I am not sure how long I will be able to run them.

Re: 300 SMKs and Seating Depth

I agree with VTi...I load mine to function out of a Surgeon action using Badger M5 bottom metal. But I have compared loading them to the lands(shooting single shot) and found no practical difference, at least in my rifle. They shoot great but I'm currently shooting the 300 grain Scenars as they shoot just a touch better overall. BTW, 28" Bartlein 1-9.75" 5R, MTU.

Re: 300 SMKs and Seating Depth

We run ours at around .050" jump due to mag length issues and they seem to shoot pretty fair. With the Seekins DBM now we could pretty easily hit the lands but just haven't had a good reason to mess with it. I know TMR was going to play around with it but I think he's too busy building rifles.
