Need a bullet for a 300 WM that can be mag fed. I want to shoot the heavier bullets. Was looking at 220 SMK, what other choices are there?

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

Hornady makes a 225 HPBT that may work out of your magazine.
I am shooting the 208 HPBT and have plenty of room in my magazine.
Berger has the 215 and 230 also.

Same here. Have shot them to 1400 yards and they performed great.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

Can the 208 amax be loaded to mag legnth?

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

If you are looking at SMKs, then you are target shooting and not hunting? I don't think you can beat the Berger hybrid 230 for BC if that is why you want to shoot heavier bullets. A less expensive option would be the Hornady 225 hpbt. You can load them both to mag length.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

180 AMAX's @ 3050 for hunting. Great flyin, repeable, hard hitting and stays together.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

+1 on the 208gr A-Max. I use real slow powder such as Retumbo with a heavy charge and get great accuracy to well beyond 1000 yds. There is a bunch of load data on that combo in the 300 WM load thread.

No problem at all to load to Mag length.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

The performance of the 208 AMAX compared to the likes of the Sierra 220 and 240 Match King is hard to argue with.

The 208 AMAX has a Litz confirmed G1 of .633 and a G7 of .325

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

I shoot the 190gr. SMK, 220gr. SMK, 208gr. Hornady AMAX, 210gr. Berger VLD, 215gr. Berger Hybrid, 225gr. Hornady BTHP.

I seat them out long to 3.5/3.6" and everyone of them fit in my AI .300WM mags, no problems.

210gr. Berger VLD with 75.5gr. of H-1000, Winchester Brass, FGMM215M Primer has been my "go to" load for awhile now. It shoots outstanding from 100yrds to 1,000yrds. 100yrd 5 to 10 shot groups are 1 hole everytime, i dont like shooting groups much though, i like shooting the dots. Work your way down to the smaller and smaller ones. Use the Shoot and See Dots, they show up very well for target idenification.

The 208gr. AMAX and RL-22 would be my second choice.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

208 amax for target and hunting

215/230 Berger Hybrid for ELR work

+1

Also the 210 Berger is pretty nice to shoot and not that long.

TRG42

208gr AMAX, 75.3gr H-1000, RWS brass, WLRM primer, COL 3.640", MV 2960

208gr AMAX, 70.6gr RL-22, Norma brass, WLRM primer, COL 3.640", UNK

TBD:
* Hornady 225gr BTHP, Retumbo, RWS brass, FGMM215M primers, COL 3.640

Note: Switching to FGMM215M primers after install in virgin RWS brass (prepped, flash hole reamed, pocket uniformed) resulted in primer extending ~ 0.002 beyond primer pocket. Wobble wobble. Primer did not recess the reqd 0.002-0.003.

Recently shot H1000 to 1100yds on MOA steel targets. Current supply of RL-22 will be phased out.

Lastly, have no problem in using the 208gr AMAX as a hunting round.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

I shoot a 300WSM, and right now my bullet choices are down to the 208gr. AMAX, 230gr. Berger Hybrid, and 200gr. Barnes LRX for hunting.

I'm getting 3015fps with the 200gr. LRX and Reloader 17, at this speed, and with its minimum expansion speed of 1600fps, it can technically expand and kill anything up to 1000yards, not that I need it to shoot that far, most shots where I live rarely go up past 400yards.

The 208gr. is pretty good out of my 300WSM, shoots pretty flat and is my go to round for 1000 yard target shooting, its just barely supersonic out to a mile, I'm shooting it at 2970fps. But the 230gr. Hybrid is the best LR round out of the bunch, Right now its at 2630fps with Reloader 19, but I'm pretty sure with Reloader 17 I can get it past 2700fps and make it supersonic out past 1800 yards. If you're into ELR shooting, the 230gr. would be my choice.

BTW all these numbers were out of a 24" barrel and were all mag fed with Alpha WSM magazines, I have no doubt the 300WM can match these numbers.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

215 Berger with 76.8 gr H1000 and Federal GMM Large Rifle Primers shoots bugholes at 100 and supersonic to almost a mile out of my 26" Krieger at sea level.

Used to shoot 208 Amaxes. Great bullets but the 215's just seem to work bit better in my stick.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

I'm liken 208 A-Max like just about everyone else.

Sierra suggests their 190 hpbt with listed accuracy load.

I have my doubts about 190 performance in 300 Win Mag compared to 208 A-Max.

Will see.

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

The 230 gr. Berger TACTICAL is short enough and still gives a great BC and wind bucking ability. Beautiful little pills!

Re: 300 Win Mag Bullet Choice

+1 on the 230 Berger OTM

I have been shooting 208 AMAX(.324 G-7), 2945 fps out of 26" bbl over 76.3 gr H1000 in Federal brass, CCI primers. Very accurate load

Just today, tested several loads with the 230, and I am sold.
I got 2880 fps over 76 gr H1000 (not compressed). No significant pressure signs.

Loaded .030 out of the lands, gives .030 clearance in the AI mag
